Maltepe University Vocational School Aviation Newsletter: The impacts of covid-19 on the aviation industry & transformation

Abstract

The COVID-19 disease, which emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019, turned into a global crisis and affected our daily lives and the way we do our business. The disease caused drastic changes in the management of processes in all areas. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, each of us focused on the effect of disease in our lives and the duration of it. In the aviation sector, issues such as how long travel restrictions and recession will last, how airline companies will adapt to the new situation and how the ensure sustainability have been added to concerns. The pandemic, which deeply affected all sectors, has also significantly affected the aviation ecosystem. The disease; created a domino effect on all stakeholders in this ecosystem such as; airlines, airports, security organizations, service support organizations and passengers. Cancellation of flights and refund of tickets due to travel restrictions, aircraft orders placed before the pandemic forced the airline companies in the financial field. While there was a recession in passenger transportation, the shipment of fundamental products such as food, medical goods, medicines increased the traffic in cargo sector. With the pandemic, remote access business models have taken a significant part in our lives. Digitalization in the sector gained speed with the pandemic and total digital transformation was realized. While life returns to normal after the pandemic and when working from home and remote access continues, business travels are going to decrease and people will question their travel habits as well as the changes in customer behaviors. Determining the passenger demands and managing them, competing with financial situations, planning the new normal and creating the safe travel environment; going to be ensured by the collaboration of aviation ecosystem’s participants. The process will be managed accurately with the understanding of the passenger demands and expectations of the companies, the strategies they have created in this direction, operational agility and flexibility. The theme of the second issue of our newsletter is “The Impacts of COVID-19 on the Aviation Industry and Transformation”. Our newsletter includes the evaluations of valuable sector representatives and academicians regarding the theme. I wish you a pleasant reading.

Aralık 2019’da Çin’in Wuhan kentinde ortaya çıkan ve tüm dünyayı etkisi altına alarak küresel bir krize dönüşen COVID 19 salgını tüm yaşamımızı ve iş yapış biçimimizi etkiledi. Salgın, her alanda süreçlerin yönetiminde köklü değişiklikler yapılmasına neden oldu.
