The use and importance of desktop virtualization technologies in the COVID-19 process

Abstract

Virtualization can be defined as software-based solutions of architectures that provide logical allocation of physical hardware resources. This can be done at different layers and for different purposes (servers, desktops, applications, storage and networking). Desktop virtualization, on the other hand, is a software system that enables people to access desktop resources anytime, anywhere via an internet connection and perform the work and transactions they need as if they were in front of a physical computer. According to the Gartner group, the main business drivers for adopting desktop virtualization are: application compatibility, business continuity, security and compliance, mobility, and enhanced productivity. Users can access desktop resources from any device, such as a computer, tablet, mobile phone, with a local or remote network connection to the central desktop virtualization server. In this study, architectures of Citrix XenDesktop, VMware Workstation, Microsoft Desktop virtualization systems with the same logical hardware are mentioned and two main virtualization architectures are focused. Session-based desktop virtualization (SBDV) and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). We will be comparing two host-based desktop virtualizations (VDI and SBDV) on these infrastructures, showing the difficulties faced by large organizations in creating a cost-effective and manageable desktop environment, and some advantages and disadvantages in different architectures. Finally, we will be sharing the benefits of desktop virtualization technologies during the pandemic period.
