HORIZON 2020 was the European Commission’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation between 2014 and 2020. With a budget of nearly €80 billion, it was the largest financial instrument for research and innovation ever in the European Union. Its predecessor, the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), for the period 2007–2013, had a budget of just over €50 billion. Almost 35 500 projects received funding within Horizon 2020 (H2020). Of these, Swedish organisations participated in a little more than 10%. Linköping University (LiU) participated in 117 projects within H2020. Based on number of participations and funding received, Linköping University positioned itself as 9th in Sweden, receiving just over €51 million in EU contribution. The purpose of this report is mainly to provide a general overview of the research projects funded by Horizon 2020 at Linköping University. The statistics have been collected from the European Commission’s reporting platform Horizon Dashboard, the European Commission’s Funding & Tenders Portal, and the LiU Grants Office Horizon 2020 database.

The objective of this report is to encourage each GEO community to share, improve or start their developments on EVs and to adopt a coherent common framework. Experts from every GEO Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs) describe the level of development of EVs in their field. The relationship with transversal policy needs is analyzed from different angles. Data and research gaps are discussed and ways forward are suggested. A common set of criterias to define EVs is put forward. A recommendation is made for a better alignment of EVs with the GEO Data Sharing Principles as well as the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). In this respect, solutions to make EVs more visible on the GEO platform are proposed. The target readership of this report is therefore all members of GEO and the Earth Observation (EO) community more generally.

The iMAR 2022 cruise “Integrated assessment of the distribution of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) in the Azores region” took place aboard the Research Vessel Pelagia of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) between July 28th and August 4th 2022. This expedition was the second leg of the iMAR cruise funded by the SEA OCEANS program of Eurofleets+ and the H2020 European project iAtlantic. It was led by the University of the Azores (Portugal) in collaboration with the Hydrographic Institute (IH), the University of Porto (Portugal), the University of Aarhus (Denmark), the National Oceanography Center (United Kingdom), GEOMAR (Germany), the University Museum of Bergen (Norway), the PP Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Russia), and the University of Vale do Itajaí (Brazil). During this cruise, we explored under-visited portions of the southern sector of the MAR in the Azores region and associated ridges and seamounts between 300 and 1,200 m depth (Figure 1): (1) unnamed seamount (coded B14) and Alfa seamount, (2) ridges around the Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent area, (3) A16 seamount and Cabeçote hills, (4) Sarda N and Sarda NE seamounts, (5) Farpas ridge, and (6) Voador seamount. On most sampling locations, we collected multibeam data, CTD measurements, water and sediment samples, as well as towed camera video transects along with ADCP data to survey deep-sea coral and sponge communities. Water samples will be used to characterize water masses properties (nutrients and physical-chemical parameters) and also for biodiversity analyses through eDNA methods. Sediment samples (collected at 1,000 m depth) will be used for biodiversity analyses through faunal studies and eDNA methods, the presence of microplastics, granulometry analyses, and physical-chemical studies. Although the data has yet to be analysed in detail, the iMAR 2022 cruise revealed some exciting discoveries. We have identified new areas that fit the FAO definition of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VME), and compiled valuable scientific information to inform the development of policies that promote the preservation of the natural heritage, ensuring the sustainable use of the deep sea, minimizing negative impacts on these vulnerable ecosystems.

An array of technologies is expected to contribute to the energy and circular transitions in multiple sectors, such as transport, energy, and electronics and telecommunications. These sectors are considered key sectors for achieving climate targets due to their role on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The widespread use of technologies will require increased amounts raw materials and may strain the established supply chains for some of these. There is interest in critical raw materials (CRMs) that have major economic relevance and face comparatively high supply risks in specific economies. Identifying the future CRM demand in the key sectors is essential to implement strategies that can mitigate potential disruptions and helps to improve resilience in the relevant supply chains. This working paper provides an overview of the CRM demand of 11 key technologies that are expected to contribute to the development of transport, energy, electronics, and telecommunication sectors. Moreover, the working paper discusses the links between the selected sectors, and identifies further implications for the future CRM demand, such as overall CRM demand from other economic sectors and technologies, circularity potential, CRM demand from production and building infrastructure, future innovations, and supply/demand interactions.

The MilKey project aims at assessing the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of European dairy production systems, and at identifying ‘win-win’ farmingpractices for sustainable and greenhouse gas (GHG) optimised milk production. This data collection guide was prepared to guide stakeholders wishing to conduct a sustainability assessment of dairy production systems. Specifically, the document can beused to facilitate the process of collecting and reporting the farm environmental and economic information necessary to conduct a sustainability assessment based on the MilKeydata template. The guide gathers and defines all variables included in the first four parts of the MilKey data template (i.e., Part I: General farm information and crop production,Part II: Dairy enterprise, Part III: Beef enterprise, and Part IV: Economic data).

While the European building sector is responsible for 40% of the energy consumption and 36% of the GHG emissions in the EU, only 25% of the building stock is energy efficient. The Renovation Wave Strategy has been launched by the European commission to boost the building stock energy performance. Bio-based products could help lower the overall carbon footprint of the construction sector. This work assesses the use of bio-based material for energy renovation. Nowadays, bio-based materials represent 3% of the total mass of building material used in Europe and 10% of its volume, with wood covering respectively two third and half of these shares. Regarding insulation, bio-based products cover about 1% of the total market volume in Europe. The bio-based material market is expected to gain importance in the years to come due to the stimulus coming from European policies like the bioeconomy strategy. However, this policy stimulus must be confronted with several barriers in the context of the renovation wave. The most important being the lack of economic competitiveness; the limited availability of biomass that, being a finite resource, cannot completely replace all other types of materials; the present lack of national norms promoting and facilitating the adoption of bio-based materials; the strong and often distorted competition with the bioenergy sector; the general lack of workers along the value chain skilled on bio-based materials (e.g. construction engineers, architects, building contractors etc.) and the limited size of the bio-based insulation material market compared to its competitors.

This document was developed within the framework of the MATES project: “Maritime Alliance for Fostering the European Blue Economy through a Marine Technology Skilling Strategy”. The objective of the project is to develop a Skills Strategy that addresses the main drivers of change to the maritime industry, in particular Shipbuilding and Offshore Renewable Energy. Both sectors are strongly linked and require new capacities to succeed in an increasingly digital, green and knowledge-driven economy. This Report describes the MATES project Sustainability and Long-Term Action Plan. This document is the consolidation of the project results and intelligence obtained from workshops with experts, Delphi questionnaires, desktop studies and surveys and the development of eleven Pilot Experiences.
