This deliverable aims to describe the evaluation activities of the SIMBAD project. The document contains the results of WP6, whose objective is to demonstrate and evaluate the SIMBAD performance modelling network. This involves the evaluation of the three main technical WPs of the project; namely WP3, WP4 and WP5. The document is divided in three main parts, one for each WP. In each section, the methodological approach and the evaluation results are described. References to previous deliverables of the project are present along the document, since those documents are an important source of information, both for the methodology description and for the results of each WP. The evaluation activities have been successfully accomplished. For each WP, the results obtained have been compared with the results obtained by the simulation tools or the ATM experts. The validation results confirm that the proposed machine learning techniques are able to accurately capture the behaviour of the air traffic system, while reducing the computational cost. Even considering the training costs, one can realize that the computational costs are considerably reduced, but if only the execution costs are considered, the costs are further reduced. This document is part of a project that has received funding from the SESAR Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 894241 under European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Peer Reviewed

SIPRI’s Environment of Peace initiative focuses on managing the risks that are created by two interwoven crises: the darkening security horizon and the immense pressures being placed on the natural world and the systems that support life on earth. The Environment of Peace research report is an in-depth look at the evidence base and analysis of the policy report Environment of Peace: Security in a New Era of Risk, including many real-world case studies. The report is the result of two years’ work by more than 30 researchers, led and guided by some of the leading voices in the fields of environment and security. Accessibly designed, the new research report is available to download in four parts: Elements of a Planetary Emergency (part 1); Security Risks of Environmental Crises (part 2); Navigating a Just and Peaceful Transition (part 3); and Enabling an Environment of Peace (part 4). This part—Security Risks of Environmental Crises (part 2)—shows how combinations of environmental and security phenomena are generating complex risks. Through a theoretical framework informed by the literature, Cedric de Coning, Research Professor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), and his team explore different pathways from environmental stress to conflict and how the darkening security horizon and environmental crises are interacting to generate different types of risk: compound, cascading, emergent, systemic and existential. The analysis is supported by numerous case studies, spanning a variety of social-ecological systems and different types of risks. Part 2 also discusses options for responding to these complex risks.

This report discusses key environmental integrity challenges for using carbon market mechanisms to implement mitigation activities in the land-use sector. The report evaluates how existing carbon market mechanisms address these challenges in practice and to what extent these approaches can mitigate environmental integrity risks. The analysis includes selected crediting mechanisms and two case studies of cap-and-trade systems, the EU LULUCF Regulation and the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme.

With little fanfare, the Atlantic Basin is becoming a central arena of globalization and a microcosm of key global trends, including the diffusion of power, deepening interdependencies, and spreading transnational risks. It has rapidly become one of the world’s principal energy reservoirs. It is the world’s most heavily traveled ocean and has become the inland sea to the vast majority of the world’s democracies. The Atlantic data seaway, already the busiest in the world, is building out fast. Pan-Atlantic commercial flows rival, and in such areas as services, investment and digital commerce exceed, those of the Pacific. Never have so many workers and consumers entered the Atlantic economy as quickly as in the past two decades. The Atlantic Ocean plays a pivotal role with respect to changing global climate and weather patterns, and offers the most immediate opportunities for “blue growth” strategies to harvest its riches. Yet the Atlantic Hemisphere is a region of extreme wealth and poverty. Atlantic peoples are on the front lines of global climate change, greater superstorms, and rising sea levels. Together they are threatened by a growing pan-Atlantic nexus of drugs, guns, and terror. Despite these dynamics, pan-Atlantic governance mechanisms and diplomatic cooperation remain in their infancy. Twenty Atlantic countries recently pioneered a new initiative to explore greater pan-Atlantic cooperation in areas ranging from sustainable development and climate issues to maritime governance and human security. Potentially transformative digital and energy dynamics are also ripe for pan-Atlantic attention. It is time to consider ways to erase the invisible line dividing the South and North Atlantic, so that societies across this vast space are better able to face the new world rising before us.
