The aim of this study was to report the burnout of the public health workforce in Greece and investigate possible relationships with the workplace environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a quantitative, cross-sectional, nationwide research study in Greece, conducted in the second quarter of 2021. An online survey was conducted. The response rate was 27%. Burnout was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Questionnaire; 19.46% of participants reported low burnout levels, 37.84% of participants reported medium burnout levels, and 42.70% reported high (above average) burnout levels. The total burnout score of rural environments was higher compared to all other groups (χ2 = 16.017), (β = 0.455), p 2 = 26.417). The depersonalization score was higher in semi-urban environments compared to all other groups (χ2 = 6.188). The findings indicate that burnout has proven to be an issue. This study contributes to the limited evidence supporting links associations and correlations between burnout and workplace environment and adds new information regarding occupational health and safety factors for workplace environment, which could be exploited to advance the quality of public health services provision during the COVID-19 pandemic in Greece.

(Autorenreferat)

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) from SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked to a hypercoagulable state, leading to arterial and venous thrombotic events, of which pulmonary embolism is the most frequent. However, arterial thromboembolisms may also occur as visceral infracts in unusual sites, such as the renal, splenic, and intestinal arteries. Case Report. A 46-year-old unvaccinated male with a COVID-19 infection was admitted to the COVID-19 isolation ward with symptoms of respiratory infection. He complained of epigastric pain and fever for several days; radiological imaging of the abdomen revealed complete splenic arterial occlusion due to a large infarct. He was treated with low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin) in therapeutic doses, resulting in minimal improvement. However, the pain worsened, and eventually, a laparotomy and splenectomy were performed. He was hospitalized for another 36 days before he was discharged in good condition. A second surgery was performed to remove a noninfected encapsulated hematoma from the subdiaphragmatic space. The patient remained healthy afterward, with no relapses. Discussion. Although rare, the number of cases of visceral infarcts in COVID-19 patients has increased. Splenic artery infarct is an exceptional case of acute abdominal pain that can be treated successfully with anticoagulant medication. Splenectomy may be required to manage refractory pain after failure of conservative management.

Fundamental rights do not only protect people from undue interferences such as censorship or mass surveillance, they also empower people to make full use of their rights and opportunities in life. It is always possible to improve the conditions and the extent to which people can enjoy their rights. The Charter can guide policy activities across the EU. The more people know about the rights guaranteed in the Charter and how to rely on them, the more powerful they become. The COVID-19 pandemic has put the protection and guarantees of our fundamental rights and freedoms to the test. Any restrictions to fundamental rights must be necessary and proportionate. This is required by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which is binding EU law. It protects and promotes a broad range of rights linked to human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity, and all national courts can apply it in cases where EU law is implemented and relevant for the final judgment.

They provide policy-makers with reliable, up-to-date information that they can use whendesigning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating policies. Reliable statistics are also essential for businesses and researchers. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted once again the need for timely, comparable and reliable European statistics. They are therefore relevant to all of us. The European Statistical System (ESS) is the partnership between the Commission (Eurostat, a directorate-general of the European Commission), and the national authorities in each Member State responsible for developing, producing and disseminating European statistics. Over the years, the European Statistical System has expanded to cover nearly all statistical fields. The ESS’s work is also coordinated with EU candidate countries and with otherCommission directorates-general and agencies, the European Central Bank (ECB) and international organisations such as United Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the International Monetary Fund, the World Health Organization, and the International Labour Organization. Figure 1 provides an overview of the ESS’s governance.

However, it is still concerned about the lack of clarity in most Member States as regards their National Recovery and Resilience Plan governance systems and the distribution of responsibilities for their implementation .The EESC would also draw attention to the need to measure progress in implementation, for which good monitoring indicators are needed; in this connection it welcomes the "Recovery and Resilience Scoreboard" initiative. Moreover, the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the need for a strong industrial policy to avoid dependence on other economic zones for many products and services.

Their goal is to create a ‘Rome Declaration’ including principles which can be a powerful guide for medium to long-term structural change brought about through international cooperation and joint action to prevent future global health crises. These principles will take into account the views of the scientific community and civil society. To that end, civil society organisations were invited to contribute to the development of principles by taking part in an online consultation on 20 April 2021.
