    Practice abstracts and videos are often envisioned within the multi-actor approach (MAA), which is typical of Horizon 2020 projects and brings together a range of different stakeholders, spanning people from science, practice, or anyone who can help tackle the objectives of the project. All experience and knowledge are therefore taken into account and the partners co-create results together, to address real-life problems through innovative and intersectoral approaches. In this perspective, practice abstracts and videos are intended to communicate a short summary of information or recommendations that have been observed or developed during the lifetime of a project, as well as to provide good practices as role models for replication in other contexts. As part of SmartCulTour’s WP6, Task 6.4 included the production of practice abstracts and the recording of relevant videos on interventions that were identified in the SmartCulTour Labs for their relevance as interesting and insightful cultural tourism interventions, and were either taking place in the region and supported by the Lab’s activities, implemented within the SmartCulTour project or co-designed by Labs’ stakeholders for future implementation. These are innovative/promising direct and indirect interventions, or a combination thereof, for the sustainable development of cultural tourism, with potential/possible impacts on sustainability and resilience of the destination. Accordingly, each Lab Manager was requested to produce one or more practice abstracts and videos, by providing practical information and outlining the main objectives and findings related to the selected intervention(s). Deliverable 6.2 gathers the texts of the practice abstracts produced by each of the six SmartCulTour Living Labs, along with the links to access the videos on the SmartCulTour website and YouTube channel. Two typologies of videos were produced: presentation video(s) of each Living Lab, and videos showcasing the intervention(s) selected, designed and/or implemented by each of them. These materials were developed primarily with a communication purpose to facilitate information sharing with those who can directly apply the findings, namely cultural tourism practitioners, policy-makers, etc. Local stakeholders were also involved in the production of the practice videos, so as to let them shape the storytelling for their own destination, while leveraging local ownership of the interventions. In order to boost their dissemination and outreach, the practice abstracts are available both in English and in the Living Lab’s local language, while the videos are subtitled in English or in the local language, as needed.

    This deliverable describes the achievements of the last year of the Joint Research Activities (JRAs for short) of the ARIADNEplus project, with a special emphasis on the Knowledge discovery and browsing service, implemented by the ARIADNE Portal with the support of the ARIADNE Aggregation Infrastructure. The report provides an integrated overview of all the scientific and technological developments that have taken place in JRA Work Packages during the above mentioned period. These Work Packages are: WP12 JRA1 - Data Integration and Interoperability (Lead beneficiary CNR) WP13 JRA2 - ARIADNEplus Infrastructure Operation and Management (Lead beneficiary CNR) WP14 JRA3 - The ARIADNEplus knowledge management system (Lead beneficiary FORTH) WP15 JRA4 - Innovative Services for Users (Lead beneficiary SND) WP16 JRA5 - Innovative Methods and Pilots (Lead beneficiary INRAP) This deliverable corresponds to the activities of tasks 12.5 (Knowledge discovery and browsing) and 12.6 (Monitoring JRA activities). The document consists of one main Section (Section 3) which provides an overview of the progress in the JRA WPs covering four main fronts: Infrastructure and Virtual Research Environments setup and operation Aggregation infrastructure The ARIADNE Content Cloud Services and pilots. A separate Section (Section 4) is devoted to the Knowledge discovery and browsing service. Sections 5 to 9 are devoted to the JRA WPs, from WP12 to WP16, in the order. Each WP Section has the same structure: 1. Goal of the WP 2. Planned schedule of activities (table) 3. Results obtained from Month 37 to Month 48 (bulleted list) 4. Problems encountered and open issues, if any. No milestone was set in the fourth year of the project for the JRAs.

    The deliverable reports work undertaken in Work package 5 under Tasks 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 and 5.7 during the final 12 months of the project, providing an update to D5.3, and assessing what has been accomplished during the lifetime of the project. The final DMP produced within Task 5.6 is reported In D5.5. Related activity has been reported in D4.3 and D4.4. ARIADNEplus has delivered a transformational upgrade and extension of the original research data infrastructure created within the preceding ARIADNE project (2013-17). It has extended ARIADNE in several dimensions: 1. Wider geographical coverage with new partners. 2. Wider disciplinary coverage with a greater emphasis on the sub-domains of palaeoanthropology, bioarchaeology, environmental archaeology, dating methods, and on the archaeology of standing structures. 3. The time span covered. 4. The depth of database integration, with a greater degree of item-level integration. 5. Greater integration of texts. 6. Broader audiences. 7. Greater range of services. This deliverable describes the final update procedures which are being followed by partners, and outlines the steps in the aggregation pipeline. This was initially presented in D5.2 but it is rehearsed here for the sake of completeness and including updates. There are two options for aggregation: the standard approach using a suite of tools for the semi-automated aggregation of large data-sets, and a basic approach for the manual upload of small numbers of records. The majority of partners have used the standard approach, but a small number used the FastCat tool for upload of a few records, and the tool has also proved invaluable for the addition of bespoke Collection records for harvested resources. Partners following the standard approach must: 1. Describe their data according to the AO-Cat using the 3M tool, usually with one mapping per partner. 2. Map subject terms to the Getty AAT using the Vocabulary Matching Tool. 3. Define any period terms used so that they are uploaded to Period0. Where temporal data needs cleaning to create consistent use of date ranges and periods, partners use an additional tool, Time Spans, to normalise date ranges. They must also ensure that spatial data is compliant with WGS 84. Partners using FastCat instead manually enter their data records in a spreadsheet-like tool, where the column headings already correspond to AO-Cat core mandatory fields, so that there can be a single mapping covering multiple partners. Data aggregated by both routes is then transformed into the ARIADNE triplestore, and is also used to create the indices used to power OpenSearch in the ARIADNE portal. Data is initially loaded into a “staging” portal for checking, before it is published in the “public” portal. Aggregation proceeds according to an agreed priority list and is managed via regular meetings of the aggregation task force, which comprises representatives of UoY-ADS, PIN, CNR, USW and FORTH, with SND often in attendance to deal with any issues which require changes to the portal interface. Progress is also monitored by a software tool, Activity Dash (implemented by FORTH in WP14), which makes it easier to monitor the progress across a large number of partners, but use is also made of the ARIADNE D4Science and Redmine help desks, the shared Google document notes from the aggregation task force meetings, and also email. Since the interim deliverable D5.3 at M36, we have aggregated an additional 1.5 million data resources covering the majority of ARIADNE subject types: archaeological sites and monuments, fieldwork events, fieldwork reports, fieldwork archives, inscriptions, dates, artefacts, rock art, building surveys, maritime, scientific analyses, burials and coins. The workflow both for new datasets and also that for adding updates to existing datasets is now tried and tested. At M48 we have over 182 million triples in the public knowledge base (387 million including the inferred triples), and over 3.3 million resources listed in the public portal. Our focus for the last months of the current project has been to complete the aggregation of datasets from the remaining data provider partners and associate partners, but also to make provision for sustainability of the infrastructure and to develop a sustainable business model for continued updates from existing partners, as well as for the addition of new datasets from organisations wanting to join (see D6.5). Since M36 we have also continued the development of application profiles for data types which extend the subject range of the ARIADNE infrastructure, and take us into item level aggregation, as reported in Deliverables D4.2 and D4.4.     This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 11 (WP11) by CNR and describes the results achieved by this work package. CNR were responsible for the delivery of TNA entitled “Visual Media for the Documentation of Fieldwork and Artefacts” at their premises in Pisa, Italy. The first TNA call went out in 2019 and only three person were able to complete their in-house training before the pandemic restrictions stopped travel. No further activities could be undertaken until 2021 when it was decided to organise the TNA as four Summer Schools and all previously accepted applicants were offered (and took up) places on the week-long courses. All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of Visual Media. One of three independent reviewers each evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. The WP11 training was designed to support researchers who wish to use visual media for the management of activities in the field and/or for the study of objects for their specific project. Participants had access to equipment and facilities in the CNR-ISTI (VCL) laboratory with technical support from the tutors, which provided the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art cameras and scanners, post-processing packages and advanced viewing platforms. Each student had the possibility to learn about creating visual media datasets for the documentation of artefacts and archaeological finds, taking in account preservation and sharing of datasets, guidance and advice were tailored to each individual project. The training concluded with a review of the results achieved and further input from local experts on continuation of the work once back home. In total, all six applicants were offered places of which five were able to attend (one dropped out due to a serious family situation). Each student was asked to complete feedback forms after completing their TNA placements. The quality of the students and their projects as well as the training provided is reflected in the feedback. All the students were highly appreciative of the Summer School and what they had learned and from the comments, it is apparent that the Summer School catered very well to the individual requirements of each student. In terms of numbers, the attendance was lower than expected (six offers for 10 places) and if the Summer School had been able to run a year or two earlier as well, it is highly likely that the target would have been met. However, it is evident that the TNA was very well received, meeting the expectations and requirements of the students so that the lower numbers actually was a benefit for those who were able to attend.

    This ARIADNEplus deliverable is the “Final Report on the Project Impact” completed in the last month of the project’s lifecycle. The evaluation of the project results covers all activities of the project. A common evaluation scheme for the impact of Integrating Activities does not exist, but ARIADNEplus developed a reporting framework that takes full account of the statements of expected impacts of the RI Programme and/or its section “Specific features for Research Infrastructures”, Part D. Chapter 2 comprises the summarised results of 11 areas of project activities, stated or implied by the expressed expectations of the RI Programme: • Extension of the stakeholder community • Supporting the FAIR data agenda in archaeology • Standardisation of archaeological datasets • Access to integrated knowledge-based resources • New services and virtual research environments (VREs) • Research infrastructures coordination • Cross-disciplinary fertilisation and sharing of resources • Innovation and partnership with industry • Use of services beyond research • TNA, training activities and resources • Dissemination and communication These activities have different weights, for example, Access to integrated knowledge-based resources comprises the whole ARIADNEplus Data Portal and integrated datasets, while Use of services beyond research is not a project priority, but nevertheless has been one of its ambitions. Chapter 3 outlines the framework. It describes in greater detail the Integrating Activity scheme, gives important background for the expected impact statements, briefly discusses the 10 statements, and references the sections which present the related activities and results achieved. Chapter 4 evaluates each of the 11 areas of project activities in detail.

    This deliverable presents the Final Dissemination and Communication Plan and Report for the ARIADNEplus project. The report covers the final 12-month period (M37-M48, i.e., January 2022- December 2022) for the dissemination and communication activities undertaken by the lead team at PIN Scrl and the (40+) partners involved in the project. As the deliverable D2.5 Final Report on Networking and Integration covers much of the dissemination activity for M37-M48, this deliverable mainly focuses upon the communication activity for the same period. Note that the figures used actually go to early M48 due to the holidays falling at the end of the deadline, so the report has been prepared a month early, to allow for review and submission prior to the start of the holidays. The first Dissemination and Communication Plan identified the different stakeholders and described how these may be reached. During the first period, the project partners and their organisations were the main focus for dissemination and communication, with this policy continuing for the second period (M19-M36). Information and news continued to be published on the website, which is aimed at a wider audience, with other methods of communication which have included partner mailing lists, social media channels and the Project Newsletter. In the final period, the focus of the dissemination has been more on the Portal in order to build up a user base and to further build the community as part of the long-term sustainability of the network. This has been made easier with the easing of COVID-related travel restrictions which has enabled partners to participate in face-to-face events and for Transnational Access to resume. The website homepage was slightly redesigned to give direct access to the Catalogue search landing page within the Portal, along with another section going to the services. The target of 30,000 unique visitors was met by M48. After the homepage, the most popular page was the Portal (link from the menu bar) followed by Trans-National Access (TNA). Social media referrals, along with partner websites and the site for the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (e-rihs.eu) are important sources of visitors. Twitter has continued to grow and remains the key social media channel for ARIADNEplus. Both Slideshare and Zenodo have been effective channels, with the latter being significant as it is aimed at the project’s key audience. With the return to physical events, a new leaflet was produced as well as a new poster. Both were used at booths at European Association of Archaeology (EAA), Budapest (31st August-3rd September) and the Conference on Cultural Heritage and New Technologies (CHNT), Vienna (10th-12th November). The project newsletter subscriber base has grown, albeit slowly, but the open rate has remained consistently high at around 40%. The Partners have continued to participate in events with sessions being held at both EAA and CHNT. In addition, NARA presented at DH2022 in Tokyo, bringing the project to the attention of a new audience in Asia. They have also been active in terms of publications, achieving in excess of 15,000 downloads. In particular, the PARTHENOS Guidelines to “FAIRify data management and make data reusable” which has been translated into more languages by ARIADNEplus, including Czech (532 views and 315 downloads), Portuguese (573 views, 363 downloads ) and Turkish (664 views, 447 downloads) has had 4,249 downloads in total to date (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3937149). The new Portal (Catalogue and Services) has been in existence since January 2021, with updates happening along the way and more datasets being uploaded over this 24-month period. At the end of 2021 (M36), there had been around 7K visitors - by 9th December 2022, this had increased to 32K new users, an increase of 25K, (357%). The UK dominates in term of visitor source countries, due to ADS having a significant share of the datasets within the portal, as well as being the first organisation to upload their data. Looking at the top 10 sources, all except Australia (No. 10) have datasets in the Portal which tends to suggest that the combined dissemination at project level and by the partners themselves is helping to attract new users. Transnational Access resumed in 2022 as three Summer Schools and a Winter School which covered all the training on offer. A total of 37 places were offered, 34 either transferring from 2020 or applying for the first time in 2022. Of these 32 attended the Summer Schools, two candidates dropping out at short notice for personal reasons. Students came both from partners (and Associate Partners) within ARIADNEplus with a few external ones as well. Despite missing two years, the attendance targets were mostly close to being met. In addition, four training events were held during 2022, all having international audiences. All training received positive feedback from the participants. The Monitoring and Assessment indicator targets were all met and in, most cases, well exceeded apart from the Newsletter which was slightly under at 85%. ARIADNEplus now has over 2,000 Twitter followers (with an effective audience of thousands more), a well-established Community on Zenodo with a download figure in excess of 10,000 and a growing affiliate programme in the form of Associate Partners and close links with the COST Action SEADDA. Working hand in hand with WP2, WP7 has helped to build the ARIADNE Community to ensure the future sustainability of the Data Infrastructure, which has now been launched as the ARIADNE RI AISBL and will start operations in early 2023, once the registration has been finalised. The results of the dissemination activities and levels of engagement shown provide a solid foundation on which to continue and build on the project activities.

    This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 8 (WP8) by PIN and describes the results achieved by this work package. PIN were responsible for the delivery of TNA entitled “Mapping Existing Datasets to CIDOC-CRM” at their premises in Prato, Italy. The first call went out in 2019 and one person was able to complete their in-house training before the pandemic restrictions stopped travel. No further activities could be undertaken until 2021, after the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions, when it was decided to organise the TNA as four Summer Schools and all previously accepted applicants were offered (and took up) places on the week-long courses. All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of CIDOC CRM. One of three independent reviewers evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. Only two applications were rejected, one being incomplete and one not aligned to the course on offer. The training had to address a wide range of interests as well as varying levels of knowledge, the project descriptions demonstrating the need for interoperability and future reuse of data. Only one student managed to attend their in-house TNA before the COVID-19 restrictions came in and the training enabled her to start work on a possible future CIDOC CRM extension for the encoding of graffiti information. The main purpose of this TNA Summer School was to introduce the 13 participants to ontologies, in particular those of the CIDOC CRM family, and to other standards for encoding information generated in the field of cultural heritage, in order to make them understand the importance of using these tools to make their archives standardised, semantically rich and ready to be integrated and made interoperable with similar information coming from different databases, with the course structured accordingly. Finally, each student was asked to complete feedbacks forms after completing their TNA placements. The student who attended in 2020 was very satisfied with her training which was obviously targeted towards her specific research requirements. Some of the students on the Summer School mentioned that they found the 3M Mapping Tool difficult to learn to use and would have liked more time which is understandable, as this is acknowledged (but they do have access to the tool and support after completing their TNA training). Other issues mentioned related specifically to individual projects (e.g. data format conversion) – one suggestion to send out a preattendance questionnaire could definitely be useful for future training of this kind. Overall, the students were happy with their training, one comment being: “It is a great program and I feel lucky to be part of it.”. The training objectives were achieved and 14 of the 15 training places on offer were taken up despite the pandemic halting all TNA activities for two years.

    This deliverable describes the ARIADNEplus project sustainability plan. Firstly, it examines the nature and requirements of the services provided by the project and describes the possible scenarios after the end of the funded period. It indicates that even if the Catalogue and the Portal may continue working, no action will cause the rapid obsolescence of the ARIADNE Catalogue. Then it describes the situation at the end of the funded period and the possible scenarios for the provision of the services developed within ARIADNEplus. Finally, the deliverable describes the actions undertaken by the project to guarantee the continuity of the services, most notably the availability of the ARIADNE Portal and the related search function in the ARIADNE Catalogue. It illustrates how the creation of a legal body, the ARIADNE Research Infrastructure – in brief ARIADNE RI – Association, will guarantee the continuation of the ARIADNEplus services even if no other funding source is secured.

    This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 10 (WP10) by CNR and describes the results achieved by this work package. CNR were responsible for the delivery of TNA entitled “Implementing Interoperability” at their premises in Pisa, Italy. The first call was intended from 2020 onwards but the pandemic restrictions stopped travel. No further activities could be undertaken until 2021 when it was decided to organise the TNA as four Summer Schools and all previously accepted applicants were offered (and took up) places on the week-long courses. All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of the training. One of three independent reviewers evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. All the applications were accepted, the majority being evaluated with the highest rating. The training had to address a wide range of interests as well as varying levels of knowledge, the project descriptions demonstrating the need for interoperability and future reuse of data. The goal of the Summer School was to enable researchers and professionals with the management of their datasets with a focus on interoperability, whether creating these from scratch and/or dealing with existing or legacy data within the context of their project. In terms of the numbers, nine of the 15 places were filled, i.e. 60%. Considering that the original plan was to run at least two Summer Schools and that not everyone was prepared to return to in-person activities immediately after travel restrictions were lifted, this is a reasonable achievement in line with expectations. Finally, each student was asked to complete feedbacks forms after completing their TNA placements. In general, the school was well received, as it can be appreciated from the detailed feedback provided by most of the students. Ontologies are nowadays widely employed both for domain specific modelling and for data integration, but there is no adequate knowledge about them, especially in the disciplines of the Humanities. When exposed to the basic principles of ontology-based modelling, young researchers in the Humanities are prompt to grasp the main concepts, since almost all of them have been exposed to philosophy and have confronted large and articulated conceptual schemas. Once the basics are understood, it does not take much to learn the tools to apply these technologies. During the lectures, students asked many questions, both theoretical on ontologies and knowledge representation in general, and specific to their projects, which they had the opportunity to present during the first lecture.

    This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 9 (WP9.1) by the Archaeology Data Service, University York, UK. This deliverable describes the aims and objectives of the training activities, the results achieved by this work package and a review of the feedback provided by the participants. The training for the first TNA call was undertaken in February 2020, however, only some of the participants were able to attend. Due to the COVID pandemic the remaining participants were transferred to the second TNA call, which was announced in February 2022. The training activity for this call initially consisted of an online four-week Summer School between the 4th May to 1st June 2022. However, this training course was postponed due to the low number of participants. The training activities were rescheduled in October 2022. Instead, an online Winter School programme was designed and delivered to suit the requirements of the participants. The Winter School programme was divided into four thematic sessions delivered over a four-week period from the 15th November to the 7th December 2022. The four thematic sessions included; Introducing the Archaeology Data Service, Data Management, Digital Preservation and Quality Assurance & Data Reuse. In addition to the main schedule, two additional special events were presented by external speakers on topics of interest to the participants. These two events included a discussion of The Dig Digital online toolkit, developed by DigVentures in partnership with Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), and the Community Owned Preservation Tools Registry (COPTR) tools as developed and curated by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC). Overall, ADS was able to deliver training to eight students in total (nine offers were made but one had to drop out at the last minute), fulfilling the target of seven accesses minimum. Following the training events, the project participants were asked to complete the TNA summary user report to provide feedback on the organisation of the Data Stewardship Schools and the quality of training delivered. The feedback from participants suggests that the participants were highly satisfied with the contents of the course and the resources produced and that the training had tangible benefits to both their projects and current positions.

    Practice abstracts and videos are often envisioned within the multi-actor approach (MAA), which is typical of Horizon 2020 projects and brings together a range of different stakeholders, spanning people from science, practice, or anyone who can help tackle the objectives of the project. All experience and knowledge are therefore taken into account and the partners co-create results together, to address real-life problems through innovative and intersectoral approaches. In this perspective, practice abstracts and videos are intended to communicate a short summary of information or recommendations that have been observed or developed during the lifetime of a project, as well as to provide good practices as role models for replication in other contexts. As part of SmartCulTour’s WP6, Task 6.4 included the production of practice abstracts and the recording of relevant videos on interventions that were identified in the SmartCulTour Labs for their relevance as interesting and insightful cultural tourism interventions, and were either taking place in the region and supported by the Lab’s activities, implemented within the SmartCulTour project or co-designed by Labs’ stakeholders for future implementation. These are innovative/promising direct and indirect interventions, or a combination thereof, for the sustainable development of cultural tourism, with potential/possible impacts on sustainability and resilience of the destination. Accordingly, each Lab Manager was requested to produce one or more practice abstracts and videos, by providing practical information and outlining the main objectives and findings related to the selected intervention(s). Deliverable 6.2 gathers the texts of the practice abstracts produced by each of the six SmartCulTour Living Labs, along with the links to access the videos on the SmartCulTour website and YouTube channel. Two typologies of videos were produced: presentation video(s) of each Living Lab, and videos showcasing the intervention(s) selected, designed and/or implemented by each of them. These materials were developed primarily with a communication purpose to facilitate information sharing with those who can directly apply the findings, namely cultural tourism practitioners, policy-makers, etc. Local stakeholders were also involved in the production of the practice videos, so as to let them shape the storytelling for their own destination, while leveraging local ownership of the interventions. In order to boost their dissemination and outreach, the practice abstracts are available both in English and in the Living Lab’s local language, while the videos are subtitled in English or in the local language, as needed.

    This deliverable describes the achievements of the last year of the Joint Research Activities (JRAs for short) of the ARIADNEplus project, with a special emphasis on the Knowledge discovery and browsing service, implemented by the ARIADNE Portal with the support of the ARIADNE Aggregation Infrastructure. The report provides an integrated overview of all the scientific and technological developments that have taken place in JRA Work Packages during the above mentioned period. These Work Packages are: WP12 JRA1 - Data Integration and Interoperability (Lead beneficiary CNR) WP13 JRA2 - ARIADNEplus Infrastructure Operation and Management (Lead beneficiary CNR) WP14 JRA3 - The ARIADNEplus knowledge management system (Lead beneficiary FORTH) WP15 JRA4 - Innovative Services for Users (Lead beneficiary SND) WP16 JRA5 - Innovative Methods and Pilots (Lead beneficiary INRAP) This deliverable corresponds to the activities of tasks 12.5 (Knowledge discovery and browsing) and 12.6 (Monitoring JRA activities). The document consists of one main Section (Section 3) which provides an overview of the progress in the JRA WPs covering four main fronts: Infrastructure and Virtual Research Environments setup and operation Aggregation infrastructure The ARIADNE Content Cloud Services and pilots. A separate Section (Section 4) is devoted to the Knowledge discovery and browsing service. Sections 5 to 9 are devoted to the JRA WPs, from WP12 to WP16, in the order.     The deliverable reports work undertaken in Work package 5 under Tasks 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 and 5.7 during the final 12 months of the project, providing an update to D5.3, and assessing what has been accomplished during the lifetime of the project. The final DMP produced within Task 5.6 is reported In D5.5. Related activity has been reported in D4.3 and D4.4. ARIADNEplus has delivered a transformational upgrade and extension of the original research data infrastructure created within the preceding ARIADNE project (2013-17). It has extended ARIADNE in several dimensions: 1. Wider geographical coverage with new partners. 2. Wider disciplinary coverage with a greater emphasis on the sub-domains of palaeoanthropology, bioarchaeology, environmental archaeology, dating methods, and on the archaeology of standing structures. 3. The time span covered. 4. The depth of database integration, with a greater degree of item-level integration. 5. Greater integration of texts. 6. Broader audiences. 7. Greater range of services. This deliverable describes the final update procedures which are being followed by partners, and outlines the steps in the aggregation pipeline. This was initially presented in D5.2 but it is rehearsed here for the sake of completeness and including updates. There are two options for aggregation: the standard approach using a suite of tools for the semi-automated aggregation of large data-sets, and a basic approach for the manual upload of small numbers of records. The majority of partners have used the standard approach, but a small number used the FastCat tool for upload of a few records, and the tool has also proved invaluable for the addition of bespoke Collection records for harvested resources. Partners following the standard approach must: 1. Describe their data according to the AO-Cat using the 3M tool, usually with one mapping per partner. 2. Map subject terms to the Getty AAT using the Vocabulary Matching Tool. 3. Define any period terms used so that they are uploaded to Period0. Where temporal data needs cleaning to create consistent use of date ranges and periods, partners use an additional tool, Time Spans, to normalise date ranges. They must also ensure that spatial data is compliant with WGS 84. Partners using FastCat instead manually enter their data records in a spreadsheet-like tool, where the column headings already correspond to AO-Cat core mandatory fields, so that there can be a single mapping covering multiple partners. Data aggregated by both routes is then transformed into the ARIADNE triplestore, and is also used to create the indices used to power OpenSearch in the ARIADNE portal. Data is initially loaded into a “staging” portal for checking, before it is published in the “public” portal. Aggregation proceeds according to an agreed priority list and is managed via regular meetings of the aggregation task force, which comprises representatives of UoY-ADS, PIN, CNR, USW and FORTH, with SND often in attendance to deal with any issues which require changes to the portal interface. Progress is also monitored by a software tool, Activity Dash (implemented by FORTH in WP14), which makes it easier to monitor the progress across a large number of partners, but use is also made of the ARIADNE D4Science and Redmine help desks, the shared Google document notes from the aggregation task force meetings, and also email. Since the interim deliverable D5.3 at M36, we have aggregated an additional 1.5 million data resources covering the majority of ARIADNE subject types: archaeological sites and monuments, fieldwork events, fieldwork reports, fieldwork archives, inscriptions, dates, artefacts, rock art, building surveys, maritime, scientific analyses, burials and coins. The workflow both for new datasets and also that for adding updates to existing datasets is now tried and tested. At M48 we have over 182 million triples in the public knowledge base (387 million including the inferred triples), and over 3.3 million resources listed in the public portal. Our focus for the last months of the current project has been to complete the aggregation of datasets from the remaining data provider partners and associate partners, but also to make provision for sustainability of the infrastructure and to develop a sustainable business model for continued updates from existing partners, as well as for the addition of new datasets from organisations wanting to join (see D6.5). Since M36 we have also continued the development of application profiles for data types which extend the subject range of the ARIADNE infrastructure, and take us into item level aggregation, as reported in Deliverables D4.2 and D4.4.     This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 11 (WP11) by CNR and describes the results achieved by this work package. CNR were responsible for the delivery of TNA entitled “Visual Media for the Documentation of Fieldwork and Artefacts” at their premises in Pisa, Italy. The first TNA call went out in 2019 and only three person were able to complete their in-house training before the pandemic restrictions stopped travel. No further activities could be undertaken until 2021 when it was decided to organise the TNA as four Summer Schools and all previously accepted applicants were offered (and took up) places on the week-long courses. All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of Visual Media. One of three independent reviewers each evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. The WP11 training was designed to support researchers who wish to use visual media for the management of activities in the field and/or for the study of objects for their specific project. Participants had access to equipment and facilities in the CNR-ISTI (VCL) laboratory with technical support from the tutors, which provided the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art cameras and scanners, post-processing packages and advanced viewing platforms. Each student had the possibility to learn about creating visual media datasets for the documentation of artefacts and archaeological finds, taking in account preservation and sharing of datasets, guidance and advice were tailored to each individual project. The training concluded with a review of the results achieved and further input from local experts on continuation of the work once back home. In total, all six applicants were offered places of which five were able to attend (one dropped out due to a serious family situation). Each student was asked to complete feedback forms after completing their TNA placements. The quality of the students and their projects as well as the training provided is reflected in the feedback. All the students were highly appreciative of the Summer School and what they had learned and from the comments, it is apparent that the Summer School catered very well to the individual requirements of each student. In terms of numbers, the attendance was lower than expected (six offers for 10 places) and if the Summer School had been able to run a year or two earlier as well, it is highly likely that the target would have been met. However, it is evident that the TNA was very well received, meeting the expectations and requirements of the students so that the lower numbers actually was a benefit for those who were able to attend.

    This ARIADNEplus deliverable is the “Final Report on the Project Impact” completed in the last month of the project’s lifecycle. The evaluation of the project results covers all activities of the project. A common evaluation scheme for the impact of Integrating Activities does not exist, but ARIADNEplus developed a reporting framework that takes full account of the statements of expected impacts of the RI Programme and/or its section “Specific features for Research Infrastructures”, Part D. Chapter 2 comprises the summarised results of 11 areas of project activities, stated or implied by the expressed expectations of the RI Programme: • Extension of the stakeholder community • Supporting the FAIR data agenda in archaeology • Standardisation of archaeological datasets • Access to integrated knowledge-based resources • New services and virtual research environments (VREs) • Research infrastructures coordination • Cross-disciplinary fertilisation and sharing of resources • Innovation and partnership with industry • Use of services beyond research • TNA, training activities and resources • Dissemination and communication These activities have different weights, for example, Access to integrated knowledge-based resources comprises the whole ARIADNEplus Data Portal and integrated datasets, while Use of services beyond research is not a project priority, but nevertheless has been one of its ambitions. Chapter 3 outlines the framework. It describes in greater detail the Integrating Activity scheme, gives important background for the expected impact statements, briefly discusses the 10 statements, and references the sections which present the related activities and results achieved. Chapter 4 evaluates each of the 11 areas of project activities in detail.

    This deliverable presents the Final Dissemination and Communication Plan and Report for the ARIADNEplus project. The report covers the final 12-month period (M37-M48, i.e., January 2022- December 2022) for the dissemination and communication activities undertaken by the lead team at PIN Scrl and the (40+) partners involved in the project. As the deliverable D2.5 Final Report on Networking and Integration covers much of the dissemination activity for M37-M48, this deliverable mainly focuses upon the communication activity for the same period. Note that the figures used actually go to early M48 due to the holidays falling at the end of the deadline, so the report has been prepared a month early, to allow for review and submission prior to the start of the holidays. The first Dissemination and Communication Plan identified the different stakeholders and described how these may be reached. During the first period, the project partners and their organisations were the main focus for dissemination and communication, with this policy continuing for the second period (M19-M36). Information and news continued to be published on the website, which is aimed at a wider audience, with other methods of communication which have included partner mailing lists, social media channels and the Project Newsletter. In the final period, the focus of the dissemination has been more on the Portal in order to build up a user base and to further build the community as part of the long-term sustainability of the network. This has been made easier with the easing of COVID-related travel restrictions which has enabled partners to participate in face-to-face events and for Transnational Access to resume. The website homepage was slightly redesigned to give direct access to the Catalogue search landing page within the Portal, along with another section going to the services. The target of 30,000 unique visitors was met by M48. After the homepage, the most popular page was the Portal (link from the menu bar) followed by Trans-National Access (TNA). Social media referrals, along with partner websites and the site for the European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science (e-rihs.eu) are important sources of visitors. Twitter has continued to grow and remains the key social media channel for ARIADNEplus. Both Slideshare and Zenodo have been effective channels, with the latter being significant as it is aimed at the project’s key audience. With the return to physical events, a new leaflet was produced as well as a new poster. Both were used at booths at European Association of Archaeology (EAA), Budapest (31st August-3rd September) and the Conference on Cultural Heritage and New Technologies (CHNT), Vienna (10th-12th November). The project newsletter subscriber base has grown, albeit slowly, but the open rate has remained consistently high at around 40%. The Partners have continued to participate in events with sessions being held at both EAA and CHNT. In addition, NARA presented at DH2022 in Tokyo, bringing the project to the attention of a new audience in Asia. They have also been active in terms of publications, achieving in excess of 15,000 downloads. In particular, the PARTHENOS Guidelines to “FAIRify data management and make data reusable” which has been translated into more languages by ARIADNEplus, including Czech (532 views and 315 downloads), Portuguese (573 views, 363 downloads ) and Turkish (664 views, 447 downloads) has had 4,249 downloads in total to date (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3937149). The new Portal (Catalogue and Services) has been in existence since January 2021, with updates happening along the way and more datasets being uploaded over this 24-month period. At the end of 2021 (M36), there had been around 7K visitors - by 9th December 2022, this had increased to 32K new users, an increase of 25K, (357%). The UK dominates in term of visitor source countries, due to ADS having a significant share of the datasets within the portal, as well as being the first organisation to upload their data. Looking at the top 10 sources, all except Australia (No. 10) have datasets in the Portal which tends to suggest that the combined dissemination at project level and by the partners themselves is helping to attract new users. Transnational Access resumed in 2022 as three Summer Schools and a Winter School which covered all the training on offer. A total of 37 places were offered, 34 either transferring from 2020 or applying for the first time in 2022. Of these 32 attended the Summer Schools, two candidates dropping out at short notice for personal reasons. Students came both from partners (and Associate Partners) within ARIADNEplus with a few external ones as well. Despite missing two years, the attendance targets were mostly close to being met. In addition, four training events were held during 2022, all having international audiences. All training received positive feedback from the participants. The Monitoring and Assessment indicator targets were all met and in, most cases, well exceeded apart from the Newsletter which was slightly under at 85%. ARIADNEplus now has over 2,000 Twitter followers (with an effective audience of thousands more), a well-established Community on Zenodo with a download figure in excess of 10,000 and a growing affiliate programme in the form of Associate Partners and close links with the COST Action SEADDA. Working hand in hand with WP2, WP7 has helped to build the ARIADNE Community to ensure the future sustainability of the Data Infrastructure, which has now been launched as the ARIADNE RI AISBL and will start operations in early 2023, once the registration has been finalised. The results of the dissemination activities and levels of engagement shown provide a solid foundation on which to continue and build on the project activities.

    This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 8 (WP8) by PIN and describes the results achieved by this work package. PIN were responsible for the delivery of TNA entitled “Mapping Existing Datasets to CIDOC-CRM” at their premises in Prato, Italy. The first call went out in 2019 and one person was able to complete their in-house training before the pandemic restrictions stopped travel. No further activities could be undertaken until 2021, after the easing of the COVID-19 restrictions, when it was decided to organise the TNA as four Summer Schools and all previously accepted applicants were offered (and took up) places on the week-long courses. All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of CIDOC CRM. One of three independent reviewers evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. Only two applications were rejected, one being incomplete and one not aligned to the course on offer. The training had to address a wide range of interests as well as varying levels of knowledge, the project descriptions demonstrating the need for interoperability and future reuse of data. Only one student managed to attend their in-house TNA before the COVID-19 restrictions came in and the training enabled her to start work on a possible future CIDOC CRM extension for the encoding of graffiti information. The main purpose of this TNA Summer School was to introduce the 13 participants to ontologies, in particular those of the CIDOC CRM family, and to other standards for encoding information generated in the field of cultural heritage, in order to make them understand the importance of using these tools to make their archives standardised, semantically rich and ready to be integrated and made interoperable with similar information coming from different databases, with the course structured accordingly. Finally, each student was asked to complete feedbacks forms after completing their TNA placements. The student who attended in 2020 was very satisfied with her training which was obviously targeted towards her specific research requirements. Some of the students on the Summer School mentioned that they found the 3M Mapping Tool difficult to learn to use and would have liked more time which is understandable, as this is acknowledged (but they do have access to the tool and support after completing their TNA training). Other issues mentioned related specifically to individual projects (e.g. data format conversion) – one suggestion to send out a preattendance questionnaire could definitely be useful for future training of this kind. Overall, the students were happy with their training, one comment being: “It is a great program and I feel lucky to be part of it.”. The training objectives were achieved and 14 of the 15 training places on offer were taken up despite the pandemic halting all TNA activities for two years.

    This deliverable describes the ARIADNEplus project sustainability plan. Firstly, it examines the nature and requirements of the services provided by the project and describes the possible scenarios after the end of the funded period. It indicates that even if the Catalogue and the Portal may continue working, no action will cause the rapid obsolescence of the ARIADNE Catalogue. Then it describes the situation at the end of the funded period and the possible scenarios for the provision of the services developed within ARIADNEplus. Finally, the deliverable describes the actions undertaken by the project to guarantee the continuity of the services, most notably the availability of the ARIADNE Portal and the related search function in the ARIADNE Catalogue. It illustrates how the creation of a legal body, the ARIADNE Research Infrastructure – in brief ARIADNE RI – Association, will guarantee the continuation of the ARIADNEplus services even if no other funding source is secured.

All candidates had to send in application forms describing their projects and how these would benefit from the use of the training. One of three independent reviewers evaluated the applications and awarded a mark and recommendation to ensure the quality and relevance of the training for the applicants. All the applications were accepted, the majority being evaluated with the highest rating. The training had to address a wide range of interests as well as varying levels of knowledge, the project descriptions demonstrating the need for interoperability and future reuse of data. The goal of the Summer School was to enable researchers and professionals with the management of their datasets with a focus on interoperability, whether creating these from scratch and/or dealing with existing or legacy data within the context of their project. In terms of the numbers, nine of the 15 places were filled, i.e. 60%. Considering that the original plan was to run at least two Summer Schools and that not everyone was prepared to return to in-person activities immediately after travel restrictions were lifted, this is a reasonable achievement in line with expectations. Finally, each student was asked to complete feedbacks forms after completing their TNA placements. In general, the school was well received, as it can be appreciated from the detailed feedback provided by most of the students. Ontologies are nowadays widely employed both for domain specific modelling and for data integration, but there is no adequate knowledge about them, especially in the disciplines of the Humanities. When exposed to the basic principles of ontology-based modelling, young researchers in the Humanities are prompt to grasp the main concepts, since almost all of them have been exposed to philosophy and have confronted large and articulated conceptual schemas. Once the basics are understood, it does not take much to learn the tools to apply these technologies. During the lectures, students asked many questions, both theoretical on ontologies and knowledge representation in general, and specific to their projects, which they had the opportunity to present during the first lecture.

    This deliverable describes the Trans National Access (TNA) activities carried out during the ARIADNEplus project within Work Package 9 (WP9.1) by the Archaeology Data Service, University York, UK. This deliverable describes the aims and objectives of the training activities, the results achieved by this work package and a review of the feedback provided by the participants. The training for the first TNA call was undertaken in February 2020, however, only some of the participants were able to attend. Due to the COVID pandemic the remaining participants were transferred to the second TNA call, which was announced in February 2022. The training activity for this call initially consisted of an online four-week Summer School between the 4th May to 1st June 2022. However, this training course was postponed due to the low number of participants. The training activities were rescheduled in October 2022. Instead, an online Winter School programme was designed and delivered to suit the requirements of the participants. The Winter School programme was divided into four thematic sessions delivered over a four-week period from the 15th November to the 7th December 2022. The four thematic sessions included; Introducing the Archaeology Data Service, Data Management, Digital Preservation and Quality Assurance & Data Reuse. In addition to the main schedule, two additional special events were presented by external speakers on topics of interest to the participants. These two events included a discussion of The Dig Digital online toolkit, developed by DigVentures in partnership with Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), and the Community Owned Preservation Tools Registry (COPTR) tools as developed and curated by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC). Overall, ADS was able to deliver training to eight students in total (nine offers were made but one had to drop out at the last minute), fulfilling the target of seven accesses minimum. Following the training events, the project participants were asked to complete the TNA summary user report to provide feedback on the organisation of the Data Stewardship Schools and the quality of training delivered. The feedback from participants suggests that the participants were highly satisfied with the contents of the course and the resources produced and that the training had tangible benefits to both their projects and current positions.
