    The rapid development of information and communication technologies and wireless sensor networks has transformed agriculture practices. New tools and methods are used to support farmers in their activities. This paper presents a context-aware system that automates irrigation decisions based on sensor measurements. Automatic irrigation overcomes the water shortage problem, and automatic sensor measurements reduce the observational work of farmers. This paper focuses on a method for developing context-aware systems using ontologies. Ontologies are used to solve heterogeneity issues in sensor measurements. Their main goal is to propose a shared data schema that precisely describes measurements to ease their interpretations. These descriptions are reusable by any machine and understandable by humans. The context-aware system also contains a decision support system based on a rules inference engine. We propose two new ontologies: The Context-Aware System Ontology addresses the development of the context-aware system in general. The Irrigation ontology automates a manual irrigation method named IRRINOV® . These ontologies reuse well-known ontologies such as the Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) and Smart Appliance REFerence (SAREF). The decision support system uses a set of rules with ontologies to infer daily irrigation decisions for farmers. This project uses real experimental data to evaluate the implementation of the decision support system.

    International audience; Oyster production has historically taken place in intertidal zones, and shellfish farms already occupy large extents of the French intertidal space. The expansion of French shellfish aquaculture within intertidal areas is therefore spatially limited, and moving production to the subtidal offshore environment is considered to be a possible solution to this problem. Finding new sites along the French Atlantic coast was studied here from the perspective of small oyster companies run by young farmers, who are interested in offshore bivalve aquaculture expansion compatible with their investment capacity. In assessing the feasibility of such offshore production, we considered three main issues: (1) bivalve growth potential and (2) technical feasibility and conflicting uses, both within a spatial framework, as well as (3) the steps and barriers of the administrative licensing process. Oyster spat in an experimental offshore cage showed significantly faster growth, in terms of both weight and length, compared to those in an intertidal cage, mainly due to lower turbidity and full-time feeding capacity (i.e., constant immersion in the water). A combination of Earth Observation data and bivalve ecophysiological modelling was then used to obtain spatial distribution maps of growth potential, which confirmed that offshore sites have better potential for oyster growth than the traditionally oyster-farmed intertidal sites overall, but that this is highly spatially variable. Small-scale producers indicated two technical factors constraining where farms could be located: bathymetry must be between 5 and 20 m and the distance from a harbor no more than five nautical miles. These were included along with maps of various environmental and socioeconomic constraints in a Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE). Touristic traffic and bottom trawling by fisherman were found to be the two other most restrictive variables. The GIS-based SMCE developed in this study showed that there is almost 400 km 2 of highly-to very highly-suitable area within which to develop offshore aquaculture using simple, low-cost bottom-cage techniques, and can be used to assist the shellfish industry in the Marine Spatial Planning decision-making process, still in progress in this coastal area. However, the complexity of the administrative processes necessary to obtain an offshore license is perceived as a stronger barrier by farmers owning small companies than site selection, technical feasibility, and required investments, and will be crucial to address in order to realistically proceed to offshore cultivation. The process demonstrated here, and the results are relevant to other coastal and offshore locations throughout the world and can be adapted for other species.

    Agronomy/agriculture and biodiversity (ag & biodiv) communities face several major societal, economic, and environmental challenges that data science approaches will help address. To achieve their goals, researchers of these communities must be able to rapidly discover, aggregate, integrate, and analyse different types of data and information sources. Semantic technologies, combined to open, FAIR data and services, is one of the answers to fully knowledge-driven, and transparent science and innovation. The D2KAB project (www.d2kab.org) aims to create a framework to turn agronomy and biodiversity data into knowledge – semantically described, interoperable, actionable, open – and investigate the scientific methods and tools to exploit this knowledge for applications in agriculture and biodiversity sciences. This project, funded by French ANR (2019-2023), will provide the means –ontologies and linked open data– for ag & biodiv to embrace semantic Web technologies in order to produce and exploit FAIR data and services. To do so, D2KAB will develop new original methods and algorithms in the following areas: data integration, text mining, semantic annotation, ontology alignment and linked data exploitation and visualization. D2KAB project brings together a unique multidisciplinary consortium of 12 partners to achieve this objective: 2 informatics research units (LIRMM, I3S); 6 INRA/IRSTEA/IRD research units at the interface of computer science and ag & biodiv (URGI, MaIAGE, IATE, DIST, TSCF, DIADE) specialized in agronomy or agriculture; 2 labs in biodiversity and ecosystem research (CEFE, URFM); 1 association of agriculture stakeholders (ACTA); and 1 partnership with Stanford BMIR department. Three main goals drive D2KAB’s roadmap: To develop state-of-the-art methods and technologies for ontology lifecycle and alignment. To build the agronomy, agriculture and biodiversity Linked Open Data cloud. To enable new semantically driven agronomy and biodiversity science. The work is starting from the recommendations of several RDA WG and IG already published or in progress (e.g. Agrisemantic WG, Vocabulary Services IG, Wheat and Rice Data Interoperability WGs, Agricultural Data IG, SHARC IG). Some of the key technological building blocks of D2KAB are AgroPortal, a reference repository for ontologies and vocabularies in agronomy; AgroLD, a semantic Web knowledge base that integrates agronomic data from public databases including GO associations, Gramene, UniprotKB, and OryGenesDB ; Corese, a semantic Web factory that implements the W3C standards RDF, RDFS, OWL-RL and SPARQL, and LDScript, a Linked Data Script Language, and STTL, the SPARQL Template Transformation Language for RDF; and Alvis, a text mining for semantic normalisation of free text by ontologies. D2KAB will allow the valorization of ag & biodiv data into real world applications leading to economic impact, smart agriculture and ecological preservation. Five driving scenarios are planned: development of an ontology-based expert system to select food packaging solutions; creation of an augmented semantic reader for Plant Health Bulletins; advanced integration of textual and experimental data on wheat phenotypes; development of new ontologies on plant root traits and extension of the Thesaurus Of Plant Characteristics; integration of plant functional biogeography data related to the Mediterranean Basin. Each of the project scenarios will have a significant impact and produce concrete outcomes for ag & biodiv scientific communities and socio-economic stakeholders in agriculture.

    International audience; Internet of Things (IoT) devices become widely used and their control is often provided through a cloud-based web service that interacts with an IoT gateway, in particular for individual users and home automation. In this paper, we propose a technique to infer private user information, i.e., actions performed, by considering a vantage point outside the end-user local IoT network. By learning the relationships between the user actions and the traffic sent by the web service to the gateway, we have been able to establish elementary signatures, one for each possible action, which can be then composed to discover compound actions in encrypted traffic. We evaluated the efficiency of our approach on one IoT gateway interacting with up to 16 IoT devices and showed that a passive attacker can infer user activities with an accuracy above 90%.

    International audience; Agroforestry, the intentional integration of trees with crops and/or livestock, can lead to multiple economic and ecological benefits compared to trees and crops/livestock grown separately. Field experimentation has been the primary approach to understanding the tree-crop interactions inherent in agroforestry. However, the number of field experiments has been limited by slow tree maturation and difficulty in obtaining consistent funding. Models have the potential to overcome these hurdles and rapidly advance understanding of agroforestry systems. Hi-sAFe is a mechanistic, biophysical model designed to explore the interactions within agroforestry systems that mix trees with crops. The model couples the pre-existing STICS crop model to a new tree model that includes several plasticity mechanisms responsive to tree-tree and tree-crop competition for light, water, and nitrogen. Monoculture crop and tree systems can also be simulated, enabling calculation of the land equivalent ratio. The model's 3D and spatially explicit form is key for accurately representing many competition and facilitation processes. Hi-sAFe is a novel tool for exploring agroforestry designs (e.g., tree spacing, crop type, tree row orientation), management strategies (e.g., thinning, branch pruning, root pruning, fertilization, irrigation), and responses to environmental variation (e.g., latitude, climate change, soil depth, soil structure and fertility, fluctuating water table). By improving our understanding of the complex interactions within agroforestry systems, Hi-sAFe can ultimately facilitate adoption of agroforestry as a sustainable land-use practice.

    Authors: Mian, Ammar;

    La télédétection par Radar à Synthèse d’Ouverture (RSO) offre une opportunité unique d’enregistrer, d’analyser et de prédire l’évolution de la surface de la Terre. La dernière décennie a permis l’avènement de nombreuses missions spatiales équipées de capteurs RSO (Sentinel-1, UAVSAR, TerraSAR X, etc.), ce qui a engendré une rapide amélioration des capacités d’acquisition d’images de la surface de la Terre. Le nombre croissant d’observations permet maintenant de construire des bases de données caractérisant l’évolution temporelle d’images, augmentant considérablement l’intérêt de l’analyse de séries temporelles pour caractériser des changements qui ont lieu à une échelle globale. Cependant, le développement de nouveaux algorithmes pour traiter ces données très volumineuses est un défi qui reste à relever. Dans ce contexte, l’objectif de cette thèse consiste ainsi à proposer et à développer des méthodologies relatives à la détection de changements dans les séries d’images ROS à très haute résolution spatiale.Le traitement de ces séries pose deux problèmes notables. En premier lieu, les méthodes d’analyse statistique performantes se basent souvent sur des données multivariées caractérisant, dans le cas des images RSO, une diversité polarimétrique, interférométrique, par exemple. Lorsque cette diversité n’est pas disponible et que les images RSO sont monocanal, de nouvelles méthodologies basées sur la décomposition en ondelettes ont été développées. Celles-ci permettent d’ajouter une diversité supplémentaire spectrale et angulaire représentant le comportement physique de rétrodiffusion des diffuseurs présents la scène de l’image. Dans un second temps, l’amélioration de la résolution spatiale sur les dernières générations de capteurs engendre une augmentation de l’hétérogénéité des données obtenues. Dans ce cas, l’hypothèse gaussienne, traditionnellement considérée pour développer les méthodologies standards de détection de changements, n’est plus valide. En conséquence, des méthodologies d’estimation robuste basée sur la famille des distributions elliptiques, mieux adaptée aux données, ont été développées.L’association de ces deux aspects a montré des résultats prometteurs pour la détection de changements.Le traitement de ces séries pose deux problèmes notables. Remote sensing data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors offer a unique opportunity to record, to analyze, and to predict the evolution of the Earth. In the last decade, numerous satellite remote sensing missions have been launched (Sentinel-1, UAVSAR, TerraSAR X, etc.). This resulted in a dramatic improvement in the Earth image acquisition capability and accessibility. The growing number of observation systems allows now to build high temporal/spatial-resolution Earth surface images data-sets. This new scenario significantly raises the interest in time-series processing to monitor changes occurring over large areas. However, developing new algorithms to process such a huge volume of data represents a current challenge. In this context, the present thesis aims at developing methodologies for change detection in high-resolution SAR image time series.These series raise two notable challenges that have to be overcome:On the one hand, standard statistical methods rely on multivariate data to infer a result which is often superior to a monovariate approach. Such multivariate data is however not always available when it concerns SAR images. To tackle this issue, new methodologies based on wavelet decomposition theory have been developed to fetch information based on the physical behavior of the scatterers present in the scene.On the other hand, the improvement in resolution obtained from the latest generation of sensors comes with an increased heterogeneity of the data obtained. For this setup, the standard Gaussian assumption used to develop classic change detection methodologies is no longer valid. As a consequence, new robust methodologies have been developed considering the family of elliptical distributions which have been shown to better fit the observed data.The association of both aspects has shown promising results in change detection applications.

    Despite the low tree diversity and scarcity of the understory vegetation, the high morphological plasticity of mangrove trees induces, at the stand level, a very large variability of forest structures that need to be mapped for assessing the functioning of such complex ecosystems. Fully constrained linear spectral unmixing (FCLSU) of very high spatial resolution (VHSR) multispectral images was tested to fine-scale map mangrove zonations in terms of horizontal variation of forest structure. The study was carried out on three Pleiades-1A satellite images covering French island territories located in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, namely Guadeloupe, Mayotte, and New Caledonia archipelagos. In each image, FCLSU was trained from the delineation of areas exclusively related to four components including either pure vegetation, soil (ferns included), water, or shadows. It was then applied to the whole mangrove cover imaged for each island and yielded the respective contributions of those four components for each image pixel. On the forest stand scale, the results interestingly indicated a close correlation between FCLSU-derived vegetation fractions and canopy closure estimated from hemispherical photographs (R2 = 0.95) and a weak relation with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (R2 = 0.29). Classification of these fractions also offered the opportunity to detect and map horizontal patterns of mangrove structure in a given site. K-means classifications of fraction indeed showed a global view of mangrove structure organization in the three sites, complementary to the outputs obtained from spectral data analysis. Our findings suggest that the pixel intensity decomposition applied to VHSR multispectral satellite images can be a simple but valuable approach for (i) mangrove canopy monitoring and (ii) mangrove forest structure analysis in the perspective of assessing mangrove dynamics and productivity. As with Lidar-based surveys, these potential new mapping capabilities deserve further physically based interpretation of sunlight scattering mechanisms within forest canopy.

    Demand for sustainably produced food is driving current strategies for intensification of the agricultural sector worldwide. To meet these challenges farmers will need to adopt a whole-farm approach to resource efficiency. They will increase their productivity with a better application of knowledge per hectare. Optimising soil fertility will enable farmers to maximise their productivity and profitability with higher grass and crop yield and quality.

    Authors: Dawaliby, Samir;

    Cette thèse traite le problème de garantir la qualité de service (QoS) dans l'internet des objets (IoT) en termes d’urgence et de fiabilité. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous avons proposé différentes solutions adaptées aux réseaux étendus LoRa (LoRaWAN). Premièrement, nous mettons en œuvre un découpage virtuel du réseau LoRa en plusieurs tranches et nous évaluons son impact en utilisant plusieurs stratégies statiques et dynamiques. Les résultats des simulations exécutés sur NS3 ont prouvé l'efficacité de l'isolation virtuelle des ressources physiques pour une tranche d'un réseau ayant des communications urgentes en réduisant l'impact venant des autres communications IoT. Motivés par ces résultats, une méthode d'optimisation est ensuite proposée pour chercher une meilleure configuration des nœuds LoRa en regardant plus en détail leur paramètres au niveau de la couche physique permettant d’améliorer ses performances en termes de QoS, de fiabilité et d’efficacité énergétique. Par contre, même avec le découpage du réseau en tranches virtuels, l’évolutivité de LoRa reste un défi en raison du manque de flexibilité lors de la gestion des réseaux sans fil actuels. Par conséquent, pour atteindre l'objectif global de garantir une bonne QoS dans un réseau IoT à grande échelle, les technologies SDN et le découpage virtuel du réseau sont adoptés simultanément pour proposer une architecture virtualisée et distribuée. Cette dernière proposition est basée sur la théorie des jeux et s'adapte plus rapidement aux changements dans un environnement IoT encombré en exploitant la prise de décision du découpage du réseau et la configuration des nœuds LoRa à la périphérie du réseau. This thesis deals with the problem of guaranteeing heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) communications in terms of urgency and reliability. Various solutions are proposed towards achieving this goal in LoRa Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN). First, we implement network slicing over LoRa standard architecture and evaluate its impact using various static and dynamic strategies. Simulation Results performed over NS3 proved the efficiency of network slicing in isolating physical resources for each slice and serving delay critical communications. Motivated by these results, a slice-based optimization is proposed next to improve the dynamic slicing strategy by investigating more LoRa parameters at the physical layer. The proposed method finds for each device the best parameters configuration that potentially improves the performance of its slice in terms of QoS, reliability and energy efficiency. Moreover, we also looked towards meeting upcoming challenges in future IoT networks that comes from the increasing number of IoT devices. Even with network slicing, LoRa scalability remained as a big challenge that should be carefully considered especially due to the lack of flexibility in managing current wireless networks. Therefore, to meet the global objective in guaranteeing QoS in large scale IoT deployments, software defined networking (SDN) and network slicing are adopted as backbone technologies for a distributed virtualized architecture and slicing strategy. The latter proposition is based on game theory and adapts faster to the changes in a congested IoT environment by leveraging slicing decision making closer to the edge.

    Prod 2019-3b pole BAP Pole EA SPE GESTAD AGROSUP; International audience; Currently, spraying chemical products in agriculture became the main means of weed controlbecause this cultural practice is very fast, inexpensive and very effective. However, awarenessof their negative impacts (environment, human health) requires thinking about new technicaland agronomic solutions. New technologies are promising techniques for a site-specific weedmanagement through the development of localized spraying.Some sprayers (often small width) located on the row may be able to answer thoseexpectations but they are most often expensive. In this context, the objective of the project“PLEVOP” (development of spot sprayer in oilseed and protein crops), proposed byTerres-Inovia, is the operational development in arable crops of a spot sprayer located on therow through model crops: the rapeseed and sunflower. The aim is to complete the chemicalweeding on the row by mechanical weeding (hoeing) on inter-row. Working with amanufacturer, MARECHAL, the objectives of the project are to 1) explore the potential of thissystem, 2) define its use conditions (volume, nozzle type, nozzle height, speed of passage, highwork output ...) and the effectiveness of this technique, in order to provide quality advice tofarmers.Through the tests conducted we want to 1 / know the influence of the type of guidance (GPSRTK,tracer wheels, vision ...) on this type of spray and 2 / study the biological efficiency onweeds by comparing it to that full treatment.Finally, to qualify the environmental gain (reduction of use and impact) and to evaluate thepracticability and the economic balance will be undeniable assets to accompany the farmer innew agri-environmental practices.
