Reliable estimates of volatility and correlation are fundamental in economics and finance for understanding the impact of macroeconomics events on the market and guiding future investments and policies. Dependence across financial returns is likely to be subject to sudden structural changes, especially in correspondence with major global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In this work, we are interested in capturing abrupt changes over time in the conditional dependence across US industry stock portfolios, over a time horizon that covers the COVID-19 pandemic. The selected stocks give a comprehensive picture of the US stock market. To this end, we develop a Bayesian multivariate stochastic volatility model based on a time-varying sequence of graphs capturing the evolution of the dependence structure. The model builds on the Gaussian graphical models and the random change points literature. In particular, we treat the number, the position of change points, and the graphs as object of posterior inference, allowing for sparsity in graph recovery and change point detection. The high dimension of the parameter space poses complex computational challenges. However, the model admits a hidden Markov model formulation. This leads to the development of an efficient computational strategy, based on a combination of sequential Monte-Carlo and Markov chain Monte-Carlo techniques. Model and computational development are widely applicable, beyond the scope of the application of interest in this work.

(Texto tomado de la fuente) Introduction: Pneumonia is a frequent cause of hospitalization. In critically ill patients, identification of the pathogen may allow timely adjustment of antibiotics. The aim of the study was to assess whether performing a multiplex PCR pneumonia panel in patients with pneumonia in Intensive Care Units (ICU), has any effect on mortality, overall hospital stay, ICU stay and duration of antimicrobial therapy. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on adult patients with pneumonia who required ICU admission in four institutions in Bogotá between November 2019 and June 2023. Mortality at 30-day, length of hospital and ICU stay, and duration of antibiotics, and their association with the performance of the multiplex PCR pneumonia panel (Filmarray) were evaluated using an inverse propensity of the treatment weighting to adjust for covariates and potential confounders. Results: 304 patients were included, 150 exposed, 154 non exposed. Mean age 65,0 years (DE 14,6), 206 males (67.8%) and mean Charlson index 4.5 (SD 2.8). 186 (61.2%) patients had COVID-19 pneumonia and 256 (84.2%) community acquired pneumonia. Length of hospital stay was 20.8 days (SD 17.0), ICU stay was 12.2 days (SD 10.9), total number of antibiotics administered was 2.73 (SD 1.74). No association was found between 30-day mortality and exposition HR 1.14 (CI 95% 0.76-1.70), although the assessment by infectious diseases specialist is associated with a lower mortality HR 0.29 (CI 95% 0.19-0.45). There was no association between exposure and antimicrobial therapy duration IRRa 1.17 (CI 95% 0.90-1.54). Discussion: The use of multiplex PCR pneumonia panel Filmarray is not associated with changes in mortality or duration of antimicrobial therapy. It is necessary to integrate this type of testing into antimicrobial stewardship programs to contribute to more rational decision-making. Following a Transfer Learning approach, we utilize the pre-trained Transformer-based XLNet model to classify tweets as Misleading or Non-Misleading and validate against a random subset of results manually. We build on this to study and contrast the characteristics of tweets in the corpus that are misleading in nature against non-misleading ones. This exploratory analysis enables us to design features (such as sentiments, hashtags, nouns, pronouns, etc) that can, in turn, be exploited for classifying tweets as (Non-)Misleading using various ML models in an explainable manner. Specifically, several ML models are employed for prediction, with up to 90% accuracy, and the importance of each feature is explained using SHAP Explainable AI (XAI) tool. While the thrust of this work is principally exploratory analysis in order to obtain insights on the online discourse on Covid-19 vaccination, we conclude the paper by outlining how these insights provide the foundations for a more actionable approach to mitigate misinformation. The curated dataset and code is made available (Github repository) so that the research community at large can reproduce, compare against, or build upon this work. The community restrictions during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic adversely impacted older adults’ physical activity levels. This convergent mixed-method study assessed the adaptation of the Recreovía, a community-based physical activity program in Bogotá, and characterized physical activity levels among older adult participants. Our results showed how the Recreovía adapted during the pandemic to continue promoting physical activity, through indoor and outdoor strategies, including virtual physical activity sessions and safety protocols. During this time, 72%–79% of the older adults attending the adapted program were physically active. A greater proportion of park users (84.2%) and more people involved in vigorous physical activity were observed during Recreovía days. Older adults had positive experiences and perceptions of the Recreovía program related to their health and social well-being. Even though the older adults prefer being outdoors, the adapted program allowed participants to continue with their physical activity routines as much as possible during the pandemic.

Starting with the closure of educational institutions due to social isolation in times of pandemic, a great stagnation and postponement in the development of social skills in young people is symbolized, evident in the current context of difficulties after the COVID-19 pandemic. , which is reflected in a variation in the dynamics in the training areas, which leads to changing the entire framework of the post-pandemic relationships of young students. In the development of human beings, university life becomes a factor considered essential, which influences lifestyle, which if not adequate can affect health and good academic performance (Jiménez and Ojeda, 2017). In the face of the pandemic, new educational methods were generated at all levels. In light of this, social networks played a primary role, influencing a change in the learning scheme that can generate stress and/or anxiety. The search for perfectionism in students is relevant in the results, evidencing concern for their future; However, they do not tend to seek approval for their work in the opinion of other people and they do not feel uneasy when working with outstanding people. While in emotional management to a lesser extent they tend to get easily irritated, and do not try to please or be tied to the demands for approval that they may face from the family or academic evaluations.

Abstract Design education has traditionally relied heavily on physical integration as it involves a lot of hands-on work, group critiques, and collaborative projects, but the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally shifted the way teaching is done, which resulted in many institutions adapting to remote teaching and learning environments. This has created challenges for design educators who have had to find ways to evaluate students’ progress in the absence of in-person interactions. In this paper, we are proposing a dashboard visualization approach that helps educators monitor the progression of the entire class of students using artificial intelligence (AI) by tracking a time-based evolution of a design statement. This approach uses various natural language processing (NLP) models to produce stock-like charts, which represent students’ and student groups’ progression through a series of divergence and convergence phases. These charts become a form of design artifact that allows educator(s) to gain a bird’s-eye view of the class and react to groups that may require assistance; at the same time, it becomes a qualitative means of evaluation and comparison across students and groups. Toward the end, this paper also showcases a web-based platform that is publicly available using such methodology, a case study that applied so methodology and recommendations of future works possible.

Time series are often affected by unusual or outlier values, making it necessary to measure the influence of infrequent events or to determine and consider the intervention point affecting the time series for accurate forecasting of future values and model parameter estimation. The 2019-2020 COVID-19 pandemic, an unexpected event in the 21st century, was an intervention event that impacted the normal provision of healthcare services. This study applied time series models with intervention and interrupted time series analysis to assess how the COVID-19 pandemic affected hospitalization services. Forecast scenarios were created to compare the observed reality with what would have been expected without the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic in Bucaramanga caused an increase in gender violence between 2020 and 2022, due to individual, social and cultural factors such as machista culture, alcoholism and religious influence. These factors generate historical inequalities between men and women, which are expressed in domination and discrimination. In this qualitative study, data from the Women's Observatory, the Attorney General's Office and the Municipal Diagnosis on intimate partner or ex-partner homicides and femicide news from 2015 to 2021 are analyzed to determine the profile of victims and aggressors of gender-based violence (GBV) in the city. The results show that more than 40% of the cases reported as gender-based violence (GBV) occurred in adult women between the ages of 29 to 59, followed by an average of 25% women between the ages of 18 to 28. The findings of this study indicate that it is necessary to implement awareness-raising policies to prevent violence against women, create safe spaces and inform about channels of care through the media, in collaboration with human rights defenders.

The results demonstrate that the inclusion of time series methodologies with interventions and interruptions significantly improves the accuracy of forecasts, highlighting the importance of these methods in effective healthcare sector planning during crises.
