    Authors: Chaturvedi, Ayush;

    Computed tomography (CT) combined with deep learning (DL) has recently shown great potential in biomedical imaging. Complex DL models with varying architectures inspired by the human brain are improving imaging software and aiding diagnosis. However, the accuracy of these DL models heavily relies on the datasets used for training, which often contain low-quality CT images from low-dose CT (LDCT) scans. Moreover, in contrast to the neural architecture of the human brain, DL models today are dense and complex, resulting in a significant computational footprint. Therefore, in this work, we propose sparse optimizations to minimize the complexity of the DL models and leverage architecture-aware optimization to reduce the total training time of these DL models. To that end, we leverage a DL model called DenseNet and Deconvolution Network (DDNet). The model enhances LDCT chest images into high-quality (HQ) ones but requires many hours to train. To further improve the quality of final HQ images, we first modified DDNet's architecture with a more robust multi-level VGG (ML-VGG) loss function to achieve state-of-the-art CT image enhancement. However, improving the loss function results in increased computational cost. Hence, we introduce sparse optimizations to reduce the complexity of the improved DL model and then propose architecture-aware optimizations to efficiently utilize the underlying computing hardware to reduce the overall training time. Finally, we evaluate our techniques for performance and accuracy using state-of-the-art hardware resources. Deep learning-based (DL) techniques that leverage computed tomography (CT) are becoming omnipresent in diagnosing diseases and abnormalities associated with different parts of the human body. However, their diagnostic accuracy is directly proportional to the quality of the CT images used in training the DL models, which is majorly governed by the radiation dose of the X-ray in the CT scanner. To improve the quality of low-dose CT (LDCT) images, DL-based techniques show promising improvements. However, these techniques require substantial computational resources and time to train the DL models. Therefore, in this work, we incorporate algorithmic techniques inspired by sparse neural architecture of the human brain to reduce the complexity of such DL models. To that end, we leverage a DL model called DenseNet and Deconvolution Network (DDNet) that enhances the quality of CT images generated by low X-ray dosage into high-quality CT images. However, due to its architecture, it takes hours to train DDNet on state-of-the-art hardware resources. Hence, in this work, we propose techniques that efficiently utilize the hardware resources and reduce the time required to train DDNet. We evaluate the efficacy of our techniques on modern supercomputers in terms of speed and accuracy. Master of Science

    Authors: Alrumaidhi, Mubarak S. M. S.;

    Road crashes pose a significant public health issue worldwide, often leading to severe injuries and fatalities. This dissertation embarks on a comprehensive examination of the factors affecting road crash severity, with a special focus on older drivers and the unique challenges introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing a dataset from Virginia, USA, the research integrates advanced statistical methods and machine learning techniques to dissect this critical issue from multiple angles. The initial study within the dissertation employs multilevel ordinal logistic regression to assess crash severity among older drivers, revealing the complex interplay of various factors such as crash type, road attributes, and driver behavior. It highlights the increased risk of severe crashes associated with head-on collisions, driver distraction or impairment, and the non-use of seat belts, specifically affecting older drivers. These findings are pivotal in understanding the unique vulnerabilities of this demographic on the road. Furthermore, the dissertation explores the efficacy of both parametric and non-parametric machine learning models in predicting crash severity. It emphasizes the innovative use of synthetic resampling techniques, particularly random over-sampling examples (ROSE) and synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE), to address class imbalances. This methodological advancement not only improves the accuracy of crash severity predictions for severe crashes but also offers a comprehensive understanding of diverse factors, including environmental and roadway characteristics. Additionally, the dissertation examines the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on road safety, revealing a paradoxical decrease in overall traffic crashes accompanied by an increase in the rate of severe injuries. This finding underscores the pandemic's transformative effect on driving behaviors and patterns, heightening risks for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. The study calls for adaptable road safety strategies responsive to global challenges and societal shifts. Collectively, the studies within this dissertation contribute substantially to transportation safety research. They demonstrate the complex nature of factors influencing crash severity and the efficacy of tailored approaches in addressing these challenges. The integration of advanced statistical methods with machine learning techniques offers a profound understanding of crash dynamics and sets a new benchmark for future research in transportation safety. This dissertation underscores the evolving challenges in road safety, especially amidst demographic shifts and global crises, and advocates for adaptive, evidence-based strategies to enhance road safety for all, particularly vulnerable groups like the older drivers. Road crashes are a major concern worldwide, often leading to serious injuries and loss of life. This dissertation delves into the critical issue of road crash severity, with a special focus on older drivers and the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on data from Virginia, USA, the research combines cutting-edge statistical methods and machine learning to shed light on this pressing matter. One important part of the research focuses on older drivers. It uses advanced analysis to find out why crashes involving this group might be more serious. The study discovered that situations like head-on collisions, driver distraction or impairment, and not wearing seat belts greatly increase the risk for older drivers. Understanding these risks is crucial in identifying the special needs of older drivers on the road. Then, the study explores the power of machine learning in predicting crash severity. Here, the research stands out by using innovative techniques to balance out the data, leading to more accurate predictions. This part of the study not only improves our understanding of what leads to severe crashes but also highlights how different environmental and road factors play a role. Following this, the research looks at how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted road safety. Interestingly, while the overall number of crashes went down during the pandemic, the rate of severe injuries in the crashes that occurred increased. This suggests that the pandemic changed driving behaviors, posing increased risks especially to pedestrians and cyclists. In summary, this dissertation offers valuable insights into the complex factors affecting road crash severity. It underscores the importance of using advanced analysis techniques to understand these dynamics better, especially in the face of demographic changes and global challenges like the pandemic. The findings are not just academically significant; they provide practical guidance for policymakers and road safety experts to develop strategies that make roads safer for everyone, particularly older drivers. Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has affected higher education institutions all over the world, causing face-toface education to cease. Schools have tried to carry out educational activities through online teaching either by using on premise infrastructure or by leasing cloud based online platforms. Although these platforms are convenient, most of them do not meet all the requirements for higher education institutions. Not knowing where the personal data is stored in a public cloud creates another problem for some countries according to laws. In this study, a new online learning platform has been developed for higher education institutions to solve these problems using state-of-the-art cloud technologies. The new system enables implementation of individual curricula of many higher education institutions in one software system, and it can be taken into service quickly in emergencies. It expands dynamically by activating a large number of streaming servers to meet the demand. The new system provides easy to use-learn interfaces, offers an economical solution for e-learning by sharing the resources, and compliant with the law on protection of personal data. The new platform was in service at 12 universities in Turkiye during the fall 2020, and its performance was measured with surveys at various levels.

In this article, the concepts of interaction and digital divide in emergency remote education practices implemented due to the Covid-19 global pandemic are discussed, and the increasing importance of radio as a traditional mass communication tool in bridging the digital divide and structuring an interactive learning process is emphasized. In this exploratory study, the main aim is to see the usefulness of university radio for education during the pandemic process by looking at the experiences gained during the Covid 19 pandemic period. The study examines the program preferences of the participants and reveals better program schedules and program types/themes that will be useful during the emergency education period. When the radio listening habits of Eskisehir Technical University students and academics are evaluated within the scope of emergency distance education applications, it is seen that radio broadcasts can be used as a powerful tool against the digital divide. Research findings show that there is a significant relationship between academic and students’ radio listening time. The factor analysis showed also revealed different factor groups for academics and students. Within the framework of radio program types, six basic factors were determined for both groups. When the learner-instructor interaction is evaluated within the framework of both broadcast times and broadcast types, it is understood that the two-way interaction process can be structured within this framework. The abstract should be about 150-200 words. The abstracts of the research papers should include the purpose, methodology, and results while the abstracts of theoretical papers should provide the general framework, special contributions to the literature, and major conclusions. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.

    Wooden pallets are the backbone of the supply chain especially because 80 percent of the products produced in the US are transported on wooden pallets. The number of new wooden pallets produced annually also has a strong correlation to the U.S. manufacturing GDP that further highlights the importance of pallets. This study was conducted to obtain key information about the market trends in the wooden pallet industry from 2019-2021. This data was compared to historical trends researched by Virginia Tech and the U. S. Forest service from 1991-2016. This study was conducted by sending out physical and online surveys to 2319 companies who produce and broker wooden pallets and crates. This data is important so that companies can use it to make better descension by looking at the important modern trends in the industry. The wooden pallet industry continued to trend upward from previous surveys conducted. In 2021, total pallet production increased 40% from 2016 increasing to 1.18 billion. As pallet production increased so did material usage. In 2021 the wooden pallet industry used an estimated 17.9 billion board feet of lumber which is a 95% increase from 2016. As for repaired and recycled pallets there were an estimated 280 million produced in 2021. This is a 16.4% decrease from the previous survey conducted. Though with this decrease approximately 89% of all received pallet cores were either repaired or used during the remanufacturing process. This study also delved into the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the wooden pallet and container industry. The results of the covid section implied that the industry was stable throughout the pandemic. Approximately 22% of respondents stated that they were not affected by the pandemic. A majority of 51% of respondents stated that they exceeded their 2019 sales, with 12% seeing no change in sales in 2020 compared to 2019. Wooden pallets are essential part of the supply chain carrying approximately 80% of all products shipped domestically. The production of pallets is also strongly correlated with the U.S. G.D.P and manufacturing G.D.P. This research was conducted to obtain important information on the market and raw material usage trends in the wooden pallet and container industry from 2019 through 2021. These trends have been compared to historical data that has been collected by Virginia tech and U.S. Forest Service pallet surveys from 1991-2016. This study was conducted by sending out physical and online surveys to 2319 companies who produce and broker wooden pallets and crates. The wooden pallet and container industry produced and estimated 919 million new pallets in 2021 which is an estimated 75% increase since 2016. The 48"x40" pallet size continues to be the dominant new pallet size with a 29% market share. The share of softwood lumber used in the industry steadily increased since 2016 and accounted for 81% of the lumber used in pallet production. The industry used 38.6% percent of the total sawn softwood lumber produced and 37.6% of the total sawn hardwood lumber produced in the U.S. The industry also produced 280 million repaired and remanufactured pallets. This is an estimated 16.4% decrease from previous research conducted in 2016. In 2021 approximately 89% of all recovered wooden pallets are converted to repaired or remanufactured pallets. Approximately 22% of respondents stated that they were not affected by the pandemic. A majority of 51% of respondents stated that they exceeded their 2019 sales, with 12% seeing no change in sales in 2020 compared to 2019. Master of Science

    BACKGROUND: There is currently a deficit of knowledge about how to define, quantify, and measure different aspects of daily routine disruptions amid large-scale disasters like COVID-19, and which psychiatric symptoms were more related to the disruptions. This study aims to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the probable positive associations between daily routine disruptions and mental disorders amid the COVID-19 pandemic and factors that moderated the associations. METHODS: PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, and MEDLINE were systematically searched up to April 2023 (PROSPERO: CRD42023356846). Independent variables included regularity, change in frequency, and change in capability of different daily routines (i.e., physical activity, diet, sleep, social activities, leisure activities, work and studies, home activities, smoking, alcohol, combined multiple routines, unspecified generic routines). Dependent variables included symptoms and/or diagnoses of mental disorders (i.e., depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and general psychological distress). RESULTS: Fifty-three eligible studies (51 independent samples, 910,503 respondents) were conducted in five continents. Daily routine disruptions were positively associated with depressive symptoms (r = 0.13, 95% CI = [0.06; 0.20], p < 0.001), anxiety symptoms (r = 0.12, 95% CI = [0.06; 0.17], p < 0.001), and general psychological distress (r = 0.09, 95% CI = [0.02; 0.16], p = 0.02). The routine-symptom associations were significant for physical activity, eating, sleep, and smoking (i.e., type), routines that were defined and assessed on regularity and change in capability (i.e., definition and assessment), and routines that were not internet-based. While the positive associations remained consistent across different sociodemographics, they were stronger in geo-temporal contexts with greater pandemic severity, lower governmental economic support, and when the routine-symptom link was examined prospectively. CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first meta-analytic evidence to show the positive association between daily routine disruptions and symptoms of mental disorders among large populations as COVID-19 dynamically unfolded across different geo-temporal contexts. Our findings highlight the priority of behavioral adjustment for enhancing population mental health in future large-scale disasters like COVID-19.

    Authors: Chaturvedi, Ayush;

    Authors: Alrumaidhi, Mubarak S. M. S.;

    Authors: Hobbs, Sean Patrick;
