These represent unique subsets of taxa from different biogeographical regions growing under common environmental conditions, connecting people to global plant research and conservation efforts while offering a place beneficial for human health and wellbeing. Despite Botanic Gardens being an ideal setting for climate change research, their potential for comparative, long-term studies and outreach in the field is still underutilised. As part of its ten-year strategy, Trinity College Botanic Garden (TCBG) aims to tap this potential and establish a programme for long-term (>30 years) monitoring of key physiological performances in its living woody plant collection. The programme will also assess particulate pollution (PM10 and PM2.5) interception by the same trees, pairing climate change and urban green research. Importantly, the project will include the design of a transferable protocol, produce vouchered herbarium specimens as a future historical archive and as a pedagogical tool, and support the garden outreach strategy, so as to nurture its link with both Trinity College Dublin and local communities, ensuring the garden’s legacy into the future. Data and metadata on stomatal conductance were collected through field measurements, data on particulate matter were collected through lab analyses of samples collected in the field. All data were managed using R v. 4.2.2.

A nationwide peatland survey was conducted across 50 ombrotrophic peatlands (bogs) in Ireland to ascertain a wide range of peat properties. In addition to natural (relatively intact) sites, we surveyed the most prevalent peatland land use categories (LUCs): grassland, forestry and peat extraction (both industrial and domestic), as well as management options (deep drained; shallow drained; rewetting). Furthermore, the entirety of the peat profile (down to the sub-peat mineral soil/bedrock) was sampled. Our results demonstrate that Irish bogs have been drastically altered by human activities and that the sampled peat properties reflect the nature and magnitude of the impact of the land use and management. 2022-07-25 JG: full report added at author's request Environmental Protection Agency

RH17002_VC7 is a 0.81 m ROV-vibrocore and was acquired from a cold-water coral mound summit on lip of the Porcupine Bank Canyon. CE18011_VC1 is a 1.30 m ROV-vibrocore and was acquired from cold-water coral mound summit on the western Porcupine Bank. To construct a geochronological framework, mixed benthic foraminifera (Cibicides lobatulus, Cibicides refulgens and Discanomalina coronata), monospecific planktic foraminifera (Globigerina bulloides) and cold-water coral pieces (Madrepora oculata) were subjected to radiometric analysis. Results were standardized using PaleoDataView (Langner and Mulitza, 2019) to allow applicability and consistency across synthesis. AMS 14C dates obtained from benthic and planktic foraminifera and CWC fragments collected from cores RH17002_VC7 and CE18011_VC1. Reservoir (res.) ages and error, calibrated (cal.) age determined from Paleo Data View (Langner and Mulitza, 2019). Age model (AM) age was determined using BACON (Blaauw and Christen, 2011). Aggradation rates (AR) are calculated through linear interpolation of acquired ages.

Clare, western Ireland. Sampling locations (both in degrees and as UTM coordinates) are also included. Mineralogically, the analysed material is apatite (species: carbonate-fluorapatite). These data are being used to support a paper which is currently under review. Data were collected by LA-Q-ICPMS in the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry in University College Dublin, and at the iCRAG Lab @ Trinity College Dublin. Both labs are in Dublin, Ireland. Spots or portions of ablations intercepting inclusions of non-apatite phases have been excluded to ensure the accuracy of reported data. Appropriate reference materials (RMs) were used to reduce and quality-control data, including: Madagascar Fluorapatite; NIST612 glass; BHVO2G glass; Durango Fluorapatite; McClure Mountain Fluorapatite; and Bamble 2 Flour/Chlor-apatite. All secondary RMs reproduced their respective U-Pb isotopic ages or element concentrations within acceptable ranges. These processed data were reduced from raw data using Iolite 3 software. The analysis was chiefly funded under an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship Award awarded to Gary J O'Sullivan (GOIPD/2019/906).

These represent unique subsets of taxa from different biogeographical regions growing under common environmental conditions, connecting people to global plant research and conservation efforts while offering a place beneficial for human health and wellbeing. Despite Botanic Gardens being an ideal setting for climate change research, their potential for comparative, long-term studies and outreach in the field is still underutilised. As part of its ten-year strategy, Trinity College Botanic Garden (TCBG) aims to tap this potential and establish a programme for long-term (>30 years) monitoring of key physiological performances in its living woody plant collection. The programme will also assess particulate pollution (PM10 and PM2.5) interception by the same trees, pairing climate change and urban green research. Importantly, the project will include the design of a transferable protocol, produce vouchered herbarium specimens as a future historical archive and as a pedagogical tool, and support the garden outreach strategy, so as to nurture its link with both Trinity College Dublin and local communities, ensuring the garden’s legacy into the future. Data and metadata on stomatal conductance were collected through field measurements, data on particulate matter were collected through lab analyses of samples collected in the field. All data were managed using R v. 4.2.2.

A nationwide peatland survey was conducted across 50 ombrotrophic peatlands (bogs) in Ireland to ascertain a wide range of peat properties. In addition to natural (relatively intact) sites, we surveyed the most prevalent peatland land use categories (LUCs): grassland, forestry and peat extraction (both industrial and domestic), as well as management options (deep drained; shallow drained; rewetting). Furthermore, the entirety of the peat profile (down to the sub-peat mineral soil/bedrock) was sampled. Our results demonstrate that Irish bogs have been drastically altered by human activities and that the sampled peat properties reflect the nature and magnitude of the impact of the land use and management. 2022-07-25 JG: full report added at author's request Environmental Protection Agency

RH17002_VC7 is a 0.81 m ROV-vibrocore and was acquired from a cold-water coral mound summit on lip of the Porcupine Bank Canyon. CE18011_VC1 is a 1.30 m ROV-vibrocore and was acquired from cold-water coral mound summit on the western Porcupine Bank. To construct a geochronological framework, mixed benthic foraminifera (Cibicides lobatulus, Cibicides refulgens and Discanomalina coronata), monospecific planktic foraminifera (Globigerina bulloides) and cold-water coral pieces (Madrepora oculata) were subjected to radiometric analysis. Results were standardized using PaleoDataView (Langner and Mulitza, 2019) to allow applicability and consistency across synthesis. AMS 14C dates obtained from benthic and planktic foraminifera and CWC fragments collected from cores RH17002_VC7 and CE18011_VC1. Reservoir (res.) ages and error, calibrated (cal.) age determined from Paleo Data View (Langner and Mulitza, 2019). Age model (AM) age was determined using BACON (Blaauw and Christen, 2011). Aggradation rates (AR) are calculated through linear interpolation of acquired ages.

Clare, western Ireland. Sampling locations (both in degrees and as UTM coordinates) are also included. Mineralogically, the analysed material is apatite (species: carbonate-fluorapatite). These data are being used to support a paper which is currently under review. Data were collected by LA-Q-ICPMS in the National Centre for Isotope Geochemistry in University College Dublin, and at the iCRAG Lab @ Trinity College Dublin. Both labs are in Dublin, Ireland. Spots or portions of ablations intercepting inclusions of non-apatite phases have been excluded to ensure the accuracy of reported data. Appropriate reference materials (RMs) were used to reduce and quality-control data, including: Madagascar Fluorapatite; NIST612 glass; BHVO2G glass; Durango Fluorapatite; McClure Mountain Fluorapatite; and Bamble 2 Flour/Chlor-apatite. All secondary RMs reproduced their respective U-Pb isotopic ages or element concentrations within acceptable ranges. These processed data were reduced from raw data using Iolite 3 software. The analysis was chiefly funded under an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship Award awarded to Gary J O'Sullivan (GOIPD/2019/906).
