Increasing the world population and global trade volume also caused an increase in the number of ships and traffic density in the seas. This significantly increased exhaust emissions from ships and their impact on air pollution. The main purpose of this study is to draw attention to the increase of exhaust emission values originating from ships and the air pollution accordingly in recent years and to reveal their effects on the environment and human health. Ships have one or several main and auxiliary machines with high power diesel engines that provide their movements. As a result of combustion of fossil fuels used in ship machinery, harmful exhaust emissions occur in terms of environment and human health. The most important of these emissions are sulphur oxide (SOx), nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), volatile organic compounds (VOC) and particulate matter (PM). Air pollutants and greenhouse gases resulting from ship exhaust emissions decrease air quality, and cause global warming and acid rains. Furthermore, the closeness of the harbors to the human habitats affects the health of the people living in the vicinity of harbours. It is understood that exhaust gases cause many diseases such as shortness of breath, asthma, respiratory failure, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer and preterm births in humans. For this reason, it is very important to take the necessary measures and increase the controls to reduce them constantly by measuring the ship exhaust emission values in the air by the authorities in the regions where the sea traffic is dense.

The history of cargo and passenger transportation by ships on Lake Van dates back many years. Today, these transportation on the lake are carried out by diesel-powered vessels. As a result of the burning of fossil fuels used by diesel ships, carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur oxide (SOX), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compound (VOC) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions occur. Exhaust emissions, which are harmful to human health and the environment, that occur in ship machinery go out of the funnels of the ships and pollute the air. As a result of the researches, it has been observed that there was no study conducted to determine the values of ship-based exhaust emissions in the region of Lake Van. That's why, being different from other existing studies in the field, this study increases its importance. Within the scope of this thesis, it is aimed to be a reference study to determine the values of ship-based exhaust emissions in the region of Lake Van and also to reveal the possible effects of the emission values obtained on the human health and environment of the region. In this study on the determination values of the ship-based exhaust emissions in the region of Lake Van, the actual fuel values of a total of 13 marine vehicles, 6 ferries (4 old and 2 new), 2 sea buses and 5 passenger engines, has been used on. The top-down method has been used in the emission calculations, and firstly, an emission estimation for 8 years and 11 months has been made from 13 vessels. Later, an emission estimate of approximately 33 years has been made for only 6 ferries from 1988 to 2020. As a result of the study, the total values of the ship-based exhaust emissions in the region of Lake Van has been calculated and presented.
