In the spring of 2020, six undergraduate students from diverse countries and engineering fields decided to design together a solution to monitor the elderly. This project was performed as part of the European Project Semester (EPS) programme at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP). The EM-BRACE solution encompasses two interconnected devices (a home station and a bracelet) and mobile/Web twin applications. The bracelet measures and transmits vital user data (pulse, temperature and impacts) to the home station, whereas the latter measures home environment parameters (temperature, humidity and pressure) and sends local and bracelet data to an Internet of Things (IoT) platform. This way, these data become accessible via the mobile/Web application. Thereby, EM-BRACE monitors the health and environment of the elderly and timely notifies caregivers about problems, contributing to the well-being of the elderly and their families. This work was partially financed by National Funds through the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) within project UIDB/50014/2020.

Identification allows to retrieve extended information and knowledge of the products. Thereby, customers are able to retrieve and share knowledge among the different products. This work presents the participative marketing as the evolution from the social media marketing toward the active participation from the prosumers and the empowerment of the marketing with the collective intelligence. Thereby, participative marketing enables new interaction and participation models based on the ubiquitous identification. This has been evaluated in a social platform, which integrates the knowledge and experiences from the customers, and in a mobile platform, which interacts with the products through the mentioned identification technologies.

Agriculture has clear impacts on both inland and coastal water quality and the locals are not aware of causes, effects and impacts of the pollution on the Black Sea and even on the surrounding neighbourhood. The agriculture is for subsistence and the area is very poor developed. Due to the Danube Delta protected area, there is a pressure down the coastal zone for seasonal tourism (only three - four months/year). Thus, there is an artificial population “growth” that is not sustained by the “real” economic development. The goal of the model is to explore alternative scenarios to improve the quality of life and sustainability within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and its marine waters (Black Sea) as one of the most impacted areas along the Romanian littoral. Land-sea interactions in the coastal MAL5 region were identified through separate sector workshops and a combined multi-sectoral workshop as part of WP1 in the COASTAL project. Land-sea interactions are at the core of our study case. For practical reasons due to data availability and considering that the activity on the area upstream has effect on this highly biodiverse area we will include in the model data collected for the entire county of Tulcea. The model combines the 3 main economic activities in Danube's Delta region: agriculture, aquaculture and tourism. The core objective of agriculture sub model is to model the transformation from conventional farming vs eco farming by trying to fulfil the EU’s recent recommendations, while assuring food security and farmer’s competitiveness on the market. For aquaculture sub model development, the freshwater aquaculture stock was considered as the fish farming area (ha), which has two components – normal and intensive aquaculture stocks. The normal fish farming area is influenced by the development rate, which is a function of the spatial pressure. In the tourism sub model we tried to answer to the following question: how far can the tourism activity can be developed in the region, without harming the environment of Danube's Delta. {"references": ["Baboianu G. This makes integration of such diverse technologies a challenging task. A typical solution to this problem is represented by universal gateways, which provide internal semantics for protocol translation. However such approach is bound to be challenged in future IoT scenarios, as it brings substantial performance impairments in settings with very large number of devices and of technologies. We address these limitations, by proposing two novel approaches. A first is based on distributing the management of the different technologies among gateways. A second approach makes use of Web Service delegation, with gateways acting only as a connecting point between the entities and some service that can interpret the information exchanged. We implement and validate experimentally these approaches, showing that they both scale sensibly better than the traditional approach, guaranteeing acceptable performance even with a high degree of heterogeneity. Moreover, we identify the criteria which should be considered when choosing between the two proposed approaches. Our results establish a set of guidelines for integration in large and heterogeneous IoT scenarios.

However, a few studies have investigated the direct effects of pharmaceuticals on the nitrogen cycle in water and soil. Pharmaceuticals can contribute to inhibition and stimulation of nitrogen cycle processes in the environment. Some pharmaceuticals have no observable effect on the nitrogen cycle in water and soil while others appeared to inhibit or stimulate for it. This review reports on the most recent evidence of effects of pharmaceuticals on the nitrogen cycle processes by examination of the potential impact of pharmaceuticals on nitrogen fixation, nitrification, ammonification, denitrification, and anammox. Research studies have identified pharmaceuticals that can either inhibit or stimulate nitrification, ammonification, denitrification, and anammox. Among these, amoxicillin, chlortetracycline, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, narasin, norfloxacin, and sulfamethazine had the most significant effects on nitrogen cycle processes. This review also clearly demonstrates that some nitrogen transformation processes such as nitrification show much higher sensitivity to the presence of pharmaceuticals than other nitrogen transformations or flows such as mineralization or ammonia volatilization. We conclude by suggesting that future studies take a more comprehensive approach to report on pharmaceuticals’ impact on the nitrogen cycle process.

In today’s world, and due to rapid technological progress, retailers must start embracing and utilizing technological devices to provide fluid, convenient, and complete customer experiences. Therefore, it becomes essential to combine both the offline and online spaces into a single entity – phygital – to eliminate boundaries that may appear between both spaces. This concept of phygital represents a significant opportunity for retailers to improve customer experience and stay ahead of the curve in an increasingly digital world. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore and compare if fashion companies are valuing a phygital strategy in driving customer experience. The research offers a model to explore and compare the phygital strategies that fashion companies (luxury companies and premium companies) utilize considering six dimensions that cover recent technological advances, thus offering a complete experience to their customers. A multiple case study was selected based on a sample of six international fashion companies from two different price segments (luxury segment and non-luxury segment). The data collected by analyzing the integration of phygital strategies between physical stores, companies’ websites, and mobile apps enabled us to confirm part of the suggested propositions, even though some with minor evidence. Nevertheless, propositions concerning connectivity, innovativeness, and flexibility (only in luxury companies) were not proved. Overall, the results, even though they present just minor evidence, showed that luxury retailers invest more in delivering phygital experiences to their customers than non-luxury retailers. The current study improves the existing knowledge of phygital retailing, as it addresses the gap in studies on phygital strategies adopted by fashion retailers. By analyzing and comparing the phygital experiences that they currently offer to customers, companies can identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall customer journey. On top of that, the proposed model allows managers to compare and re-evaluate their phygital strategy with other competitors similar to them to gain competitiveness in an ever-evolving market.
