    Authors: Silva, Lígia Torres;

    O crescimento da população mundial tem sido acompanhado do reforço da população que vive em áreas urbanas, realidade que resulta muito frequentemente em pressões sobre os espaços, os ecossistemas, as infraestruturas, os equipamentos e os modos de vida. A problemática da qualidade de vida em cidades assume relevância crescente, sobretudo no que se refere à sua dimensão ambiental. As fontes domésticas e industriais e, muito especialmente, o tráfego motorizado, são responsáveis por emissões de poluentes e ruído que comprometem decisivamente o quadro de vivência nas cidades de hoje. A qualidade de vida ou, na sua versão mais frequente, qualidade dos lugares urbanos envolve um conjunto mais ou menos alargado de dimensões e indicadores. É precisamente sobre uma destas dimensões, o Ambiente Urbano, que versa esta tese. O objectivo principal do trabalho é o estudo dos fenómenos ruído e poluição atmosférica em meio urbano, na perspectiva da qualidade de vida dos cidadãos. Com o recurso a modelos computacionais de simulação dos fenómenos associados à emissão e propagação do ruído e dispersão de poluentes atmosféricos, numa plataforma de um SIG, foram desenvolvidos mapas de ruído e mapas horizontais dos principais poluentes atmosféricos em meio urbano e procedeu-se ao seu cruzamento com a população. Esta combinação foi a base para a identificação das zonas de criticidade acústica e de criticidade de poluição atmosférica, respectivamente em termos de níveis de ruído e concentrações das espécies de poluentes estudadas, e dos índices de exposição da população a esses níveis de poluição. É proposto um modelo de avaliação/classificação da qualidade do ar em meio urbano, considerando e integrando as seguintes espécies poluentes: CO, PM10, NO2, CO2, O3 e C6H6. Este modelo é aplicado a uma cidade de média dimensão, Viana do Castelo, por forma a avaliar o respectivo ambiente urbano e o nível de criticidade que lhe está associado. Finalmente, os resultados da avaliação do ruído ambiental e da qualidade do ar são combinados para dar origem a uma avaliação global do ambiente urbano da cidade, tendo-se obtido uma paisagem de qualidade globalmente muito positiva, embora com alguns pontos críticos que carecem de acompanhamento e monitorização. The growth of the World’s population has been followed by the reinforcement of the population living in urban areas, which very often results in additional stress over space, ecosystems, infrastructures, facilities and the way of life. The problematic of quality of life in cities assumes an increasing relevance, especially concerning the environmental dimension. Domestic and industrial sources, and mainly motorised traffic are responsible for pollutant emissions and noise which decisively affects the living in today’s’ cities. The quality of life or, taking the most common version, the quality of places involves a variable set of dimensions and indicators. It is precisely about one of these dimensions, the Urban Environment, that this thesis is about. The main objective of this peace of work is to study the urban noise and air pollution phenomena, from a quality of life point of view. Making use of computational simulation models for the phenomena associated with emission and propagation of noise and dispersion of air pollutants, within a GIS platform, noise maps and pollutant concentration maps were developed and afterwards overlapped with population layers. This combination was the basis to identify critical zones from both acoustical and air pollution perspectives, and to find out the distribution of population subjected to different levels of pollution. A model for air quality evaluation/classification is proposed, considering and integrating the following pollutants: CO, PM10, NO2, CO2, O3 e C6H6. This model is applied to a medium-sized city, Viana do Castelo, in order to evaluate its urban environmental quality and the critical level associated. Finally the results of noise and air quality are combined to generate a global evaluation of the city’s urban environment. Results reveal a quite positive environmental quality, although some critical points require further monitoring. Tese de Doutoramento em Engenharia Civil

    Authors: Ferreira, Susana Isabel de Oliveira;

    O planeta Terra tem sofrido alterações ao longo do tempo geológico. Logo após a sua formação, há 4.6 Ga, era uma planeta homogéneo. Durante este longo intervalo de tempo, a Geosfera sofreu diversos processos de diferenciação geoquímica e geológica, responsáveis pelo desenvolvimento da actual estrutura interna da Terra. A formação da Atmosfera e da Hidrosfera ocorreu também durante o Hadaico, aproximadamente há 4.0 Ga. A evolução e interacção dos grandes sistemas terrestres (geosfera, atmosfera e hidrosfera) permitiu, ao longo da história da Terra, a reunião de condições favoráveis ao aparecimento da Vida, há pelo menos 3.8 Ga. As primeiras formas de Vida podem ter surgido nos mais diversos ambientes constituindo outro grande sistema terrestre, a Biosfera. Este trabalho tem como principal objectivo a compilação da informação mais relevante relacionada com os principais eventos e outros episódios significantes, que contribuíram para a origem da Vida e seu suporte, tendo como limite temporal o início da Era Paleozóica (há cerca de 488 Ma). The planet Earth has been changing through the geologic time. The Earth was created 4.6 Ga ago as a homogeneous planet. During this long period of time, several processes occurred originating the geochemical and geological differentiation of the Geosphere and developing the present internal Earth structure. The formation of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere occurred during the Hadean, approximately 4.0 Ga ago. The evolution and interaction of these important terrestrial systems (geosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere) allowed, during Earth history, the development of vital conditions for the emergence of Life, at least 3.8 Ga ago. The first organisms might have appeared from the most diverse environments constituting another important system, the Biosphere. The main objective of this work is to compile the most relevant information related with major geological events and other significant episodes, which have contributed to the emergence of Life and its support throughout geological time until early Paleozoic (around 488 Ma ago).
