Drainage 16 networks in the Eastern Anti-Atlas of Morocco consist of complex spatial arrangements with various types of 17 patterns, such as trellis, angular, dendritic and parallel. The objective was to distinguish, quantify and rank 18 the relationship that may exist between the different drainage networks patterns, geology and 19 geomorphology. A total of 230 basins were extracted from the ASTER-GDEM Elevation Data (USGS), which 20 were assigned 16 parameters reflecting their topography, morphometry, slope and geology. The statistical 21 treatment of the dataset (16 variables x 230 observations) was carried out through principal component 22 analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC), in order to 23 investigate the complexity of drainage network patterns and their distribution. The PCA showed that the 24 topographical, slope and geological parameters, i.e. primarily the parameter associated with structural 25 control, best explains the variation in the type of the drainage pattern. The LDA made it possible to distinguish 26 between the four types of drainage patterns with a success rate of 90%, using 3 discriminant functions that 27 were better correlated with geological and slope parameters. LDA and AHC statistical treatments show 28 confusion between the parallel, trellis and angular patterns, on the one hand, due to similar factors 29 responsible for their formation, and on the other because of transitions phenomenon from one drainage 30 pattern to another over time or space. Such possible drainage network shifting may be explained by the 31 geological events that have occurred in the Eastern Anti Atlas from Lower Mesozoic to the Quaternary. 32 33

International audience; With over 8 million inhabitants and 4 million motor vehicles on the streets, Tehran is one of the most crowded and polluted cities in the Middle East. Frequent exceedances of national daily PM2.5 limit have been reported in this city during the last decade, yet, the chemical composition and sources of fine particles are poorly determined. In the present study, 24-hour PM2.5 samples were collected at two urban sites during two separate campaigns, a one-year period from 2014 to 2015 and another three-month period at the beginning of 2017. Concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), inorganic ions, trace metals and specific organic molecular markers were measured by chemical analysis of filter samples. The dominant mass components were organic matter (OM), sulfate and EC. With a 20% water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction, the predominance of primary anthropogenic sources (i.e. fossil fuel combustion) was anticipated. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis using the ME-2 (Multilinear Engine-2) solver was then applied to this dataset. 5 factors were identified by Marker-PMF, named as traffic exhaust (TE), biomass burning (BB), industries (Ind.), nitrate-rich and sulfate-rich. Another 4 factors were identified by Metal-PMF, including, dust, vehicles (traffic non-exhaust, TNE), industries (Ind.) and heavy fuel combustion (HFC). Traffic exhaust was the dominant source with 44.5% contribution to total quantified PM2.5 mass. Sulfate-rich (24.2%) and nitrate-rich (18.4%) factors were the next major contributing sources. Dust (4.4%) and biomass burning (6.7%) also had small contributions while the total share of all other factors was < 2%. Investigating the correlations of different factors between the two sampling sites showed that traffic emissions and biomass burning were local, whereas dust, heavy fuel combustion and industrial sources were regional. Results of this study indicate that gas- and particle-phase pollutants emitted from fossil fuel combustion (mobile and stationary) are the principal origin of both primary and secondary fine aerosols in Tehran.

s interior. Unlike their solid counterparts, these properties of liquids pose great technical challenges to high-pressure measurements and are poorly constrained. Here we present the technical developments that have been made at the GSECARS beamline 13-ID-D of the Advanced Photon Source for the past several years for determination of sound velocity of liquids using the ultrasonic techniques in a 1000-ton Kawai-type multianvil apparatus. Temperature of the sound velocity measurements has been extended to ~2400 K at 4 GPa and ~2000 K at 8 GPa to enable studies of liquids with very high melting temperatures, such as the silicate liquids. Sound velocity and equation of state of liquids provide important constraints on the generation, presence, and transport of silicate and metallic melts in the Earth&rsquo

Cembranos;In scalar-field dark matter scenarios, a scalar-field soliton could form at the center of galactic halos, around the supermassive black holes that sit at the center of galaxies. Focusing on the large scalar-mass limit, where the soliton is formed by the balance between self-gravity and a repulsive self-interaction, we study the infall of the scalar field onto the central Schwarzschild black hole. We derive the scalar-field profile, from the Schwarzschild radius to the large radii dominated by the scalar cloud. We show that the steady state solution selects the maximum allowed flux, with a critical profile that is similar to the transonic solution obtained for the hydrodynamic case. This finite flux, which scales as the inverse of the self-interaction coupling, is small enough to allow the dark matter soliton to survive for many Hubble times. Comment: 16 pages

Ecosystem carbon fux partitioning is strongly infuenced by poorly constrained soil CO2 efux (Fsoil). Simple model applications (Arrhenius and Q10) do not account for observed diel hysteresis between Fsoil and soil temperature. How this hysteresis emerges and how it will respond to variation in vegetation or soil moisture remains unknown. We used an ecosystem-level experimental system to independently control potential abiotic and biotic drivers of the Fsoil-T hysteresis. We hypothesized a principally biological cause for the hysteresis. Alternatively, Fsoil hysteresis is primarily driven by thermal convection through the soil profle. We conducted experiments under normal, fuctuating diurnal soil temperatures and under conditions where we held soil temperature near constant. We found (i) signifcant and nearly equal amplitudes of hysteresis regardless of soil temperature regime, and (ii) the amplitude of hysteresis was most closely tied to baseline rates of Fsoil, which were mostly driven by photosynthetic rates. Together, these fndings suggest a more biologically-driven mechanism associated with photosynthate transport in yielding the observed patterns of soil CO2 efux being out of sync with soil temperature. These fndings should be considered on future partitioning models of ecosystem respiration. SUMMARY We analyse a nearly 8-yr record (2010–2018) of the superconducting gravimeter OSG-060 located at Djougou (Benin, West Africa). After tidal analysis removing all solid Earth and ocean loading tidal contributions and correcting for the long-term instrumental drift and atmospheric loading, we obtain a gravity residual signal which is essentially a hydrological signal due to the monsoon. This signal is first compared to several global hydrology models (ERA, GLDAS and MERRA). Our superconducting gravimeter residual signal is also superimposed onto episodic absolute gravity measurements and to space gravimetry GRACE data. A further comparison is done using local hydrological data like soil moisture in the very superficial layer (0–1.2 m), water table depth and rainfall. The temporal evolution of the correlation coefficient between the gravity observation and both the soil moisture and the water table is well explained by the direct infiltration process of rain water together with the lateral transfer discharging the water table. Finally, we compute the water storage changes (WSC) using a simulation based on the physically based Parflow-CLM numerical model of the catchment, which solves the water and energy budget from the impermeable bedrock to the top of the canopy layer using the 3-D Richards equation for the water transfers in the ground, the kinematic wave equation for the surface runoff and a land surface model (CLM) for the energy budget and evapotranspiration calculation. This model forced by rain is in agreement with evapotranspiration and stream flow data and leads to simulated water storage changes that nicely fit to the observed gravity signal. This study points out the important role played by surface gravity changes in terms of a reliable proxy for water storage changes occurring in small catchments.

While teleosaurid diversity collapsed at the end of the Jurassic, most likely as a result of a global cooling of the oceans and associated marine regressions, metriorhynchid diversity was largely unaffected, although the fossil record of Thalattosuchia is poor in the Cretaceous. In order to investigate the possible differences in thermophysiologies between these two thalattosuchian lineages, we analysed stable oxygen isotope compositions (expressed as δ18O values) of tooth apatite from metriorhynchid and teleosaurid specimens. We then compared them with the δ18O values of coexisting endo-homeothermic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, as well as ecto-poikilothermic chondrichthyans and osteichthyans. The distribution of δ18O values suggests that both teleosaurids and metriorhynchids had body temperatures intermediate between those of typical ecto-poikilothermic vertebrates and warm-blooded ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, metriorhynchids being slightly warmer than teleosaurids. We propose that metriorhynchids were able to raise their body temperature above that of the ambient environment by metabolic heat production, as endotherms do, but could not maintain a constant body temperature compared with fully homeothermic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Teleosaurids, on the other hand, may have raised their body temperature by mouth-gape basking, as modern crocodylians do, and benefited from the thermal inertia of their large body mass to maintain their body temperature above the ambient one. Endothermy in metriorhynchids might have been a by-product of their ecological adaptations to active pelagic hunting, and it probably allowed them to survive the global cooling of the Late Jurassic, thus explaining the selective extinction affecting Thalattosuchia at the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Vertebrate palaeophysiology'.

Such brilliance would put compact neutron sources on par with existing medium flux neutron research reactors. We performed the first neutron production tests on the IPHI proton accelerator at Saclay. The neutron fluxes were measured using gold foil activation and 3He detectors. The measured fluxes were compared with MCNP and GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations in which the whole experimental setup was modelled. There is a good agreement between the experimental measurements and the Monte-Carlo simulations. The available modelling tools will allow us to optimize the whole Target Moderator Reflector assembly together with the neutron scattering spectrometer geometries. Research goal is to find geometric variations in western and eastern flanks of the trench and correlation of the submarine geomorphology with geologic settings and seismicity through numerical and graphical modelling. Methods include GMT based analysis of the bathymetry, geomorphic shape and surface trends in topography and gravity grids. Dataset contains raster grids on bathymetry, gravity, geoid and geological layers. Technical workflow is following: 1) Bathymetric mapping by modules ('grdcut', 'grdimage'); 2) Datasets visualizing and analysis, 3) Topographic and gravimetric surface modelling by ASCII data; 4) Cartographic mapping ('psbasemap', 'psxy', 'grdcontour') 4) 3D-mesh modelling; 5) Automatically digitized orthogonal cross-stacked profiles ('grdtrack'); 6) Visualizing curvature trends ('trend1d'); 7) statistical histograms. Results reveal unevenness in the structure of the submarine landforms. Modelling cross-section profiles highlighted depth variation at different parts of the transects and seafloor segments. Geomorphic structure has straight shape form of the slopes with steep oceanward forearc. Its geometry has steep and strait shape which correlates with seismicity. Depth samples vary:-3000 to-6200 m, seafloor is 3-5 km wide. Trench has symmetric accurate 'V-shaped' geometric form for the segment of-30 to-30 km. Oceanward side slope increases towards continental shelf, left flank stabilizes in depths at-50 km from the trench axis, deepens at-50 to 0 m, decreases at-3,200 to-5,800. Oceanward flank gradient varies: slope steepness of 35,63° at 0-20 km, 42,17° at 20-40 km, 44° at 40-60km. Left flank has 43,24° at 0-24 km, 28,33° at 24-40 km, 14° at 40-60 km, 1,13° at 60-200 km. Marine vertical gravity correlates with tectonic slab contours (20-30 mGal on the trench slopes). The study demonstrated effective GMT-based framework with a multidisciplinary scope that combined cartographic methods of modelling deep-sea trench profiles with geological, bathymetric and geophysical analysis. Technical application of the advanced cartographic solutions and high quality mapping by GMT demonstrated its functionality for data analysis and effectiveness of the geoinformation processing. Proposed techniques and workflow methodology provided framework for geological mapping and can be applied in further similar research.

International audience; The Lago Superiore Unit (LSU, Monviso Massif, Italian Western Alps) is a section of fossil oceanic lithosphere equilibrated to eclogite facies conditions (550 °C – 2.8 GPa) during Alpine subduction (45–40 Ma). It is cut by two major shear zones, namely the Intermediate (ISZ) and Lower Shear Zone (LSZ), mostly consisting of serpentinite. The lowermost, serpentine-rich, section of the Lago Superiore Unit, the Basal Serpentinite, separates the HP ophiolite domain from the underlying continental Dora-Maira Unit.Here we show that the LSZ and the Basal Serpentinite were active at different stages of the subduction and exhumation history of the complex. Most of retrograde deformation and mineral re-equilibration were localized in the LSZ. Channelized fluids percolating during this phase chemically homogenized the LSZ serpentinites, that preserved their HP mineralogy only locally; the best-preserved relicts of the eclogite-facies high pressure stage within the LSZ serpentinite are nodules of magnesite (representing former veins) and eclogite blocks. Differently, the underlying Basal Serpentinite largely escaped the exhumation-related processes and still records the prograde chemical and petrological history of the LSU serpentinite, from ocean-floor hydration to HP metamorphic conditions.The Lago Superiore Unit thus represents a snapshot of major Alpine metamorphic and shearing events, from prograde subduction to exhumation. Its km-scale thickness, and the oriented antigorite fabric in the Lower Shear Zone and Basal Serpentinite makes it a good seismic reflector. This HP ophiolite complex can thus be used as proxy of a deep (70–80 km) Alpine-type subduction zone, and to better constrain and interpret seismic images of present-day convergent margins.

Drainage 16 networks in the Eastern Anti-Atlas of Morocco consist of complex spatial arrangements with various types of 17 patterns, such as trellis, angular, dendritic and parallel. The objective was to distinguish, quantify and rank 18 the relationship that may exist between the different drainage networks patterns, geology and 19 geomorphology. A total of 230 basins were extracted from the ASTER-GDEM Elevation Data (USGS), which 20 were assigned 16 parameters reflecting their topography, morphometry, slope and geology. The statistical 21 treatment of the dataset (16 variables x 230 observations) was carried out through principal component 22 analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC), in order to 23 investigate the complexity of drainage network patterns and their distribution. The PCA showed that the 24 topographical, slope and geological parameters, i.e. primarily the parameter associated with structural 25 control, best explains the variation in the type of the drainage pattern. The LDA made it possible to distinguish 26 between the four types of drainage patterns with a success rate of 90%, using 3 discriminant functions that 27 were better correlated with geological and slope parameters. LDA and AHC statistical treatments show 28 confusion between the parallel, trellis and angular patterns, on the one hand, due to similar factors 29 responsible for their formation, and on the other because of transitions phenomenon from one drainage 30 pattern to another over time or space. Such possible drainage network shifting may be explained by the 31 geological events that have occurred in the Eastern Anti Atlas from Lower Mesozoic to the Quaternary. 32 33

International audience; With over 8 million inhabitants and 4 million motor vehicles on the streets, Tehran is one of the most crowded and polluted cities in the Middle East. Frequent exceedances of national daily PM2.5 limit have been reported in this city during the last decade, yet, the chemical composition and sources of fine particles are poorly determined. In the present study, 24-hour PM2.5 samples were collected at two urban sites during two separate campaigns, a one-year period from 2014 to 2015 and another three-month period at the beginning of 2017. Concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), inorganic ions, trace metals and specific organic molecular markers were measured by chemical analysis of filter samples. The dominant mass components were organic matter (OM), sulfate and EC. With a 20% water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction, the predominance of primary anthropogenic sources (i.e. fossil fuel combustion) was anticipated. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis using the ME-2 (Multilinear Engine-2) solver was then applied to this dataset. 5 factors were identified by Marker-PMF, named as traffic exhaust (TE), biomass burning (BB), industries (Ind.), nitrate-rich and sulfate-rich. Another 4 factors were identified by Metal-PMF, including, dust, vehicles (traffic non-exhaust, TNE), industries (Ind.) and heavy fuel combustion (HFC). Traffic exhaust was the dominant source with 44.5% contribution to total quantified PM2.5 mass. Sulfate-rich (24.2%) and nitrate-rich (18.4%) factors were the next major contributing sources. Dust (4.4%) and biomass burning (6.7%) also had small contributions while the total share of all other factors was < 2%. Investigating the correlations of different factors between the two sampling sites showed that traffic emissions and biomass burning were local, whereas dust, heavy fuel combustion and industrial sources were regional. Results of this study indicate that gas- and particle-phase pollutants emitted from fossil fuel combustion (mobile and stationary) are the principal origin of both primary and secondary fine aerosols in Tehran.

Here we present the technical developments that have been made at the GSECARS beamline 13-ID-D of the Advanced Photon Source for the past several years for determination of sound velocity of liquids using the ultrasonic techniques in a 1000-ton Kawai-type multianvil apparatus. Temperature of the sound velocity measurements has been extended to ~2400 K at 4 GPa and ~2000 K at 8 GPa to enable studies of liquids with very high melting temperatures, such as the silicate liquids. Cembranos;In scalar-field dark matter scenarios, a scalar-field soliton could form at the center of galactic halos, around the supermassive black holes that sit at the center of galaxies. Focusing on the large scalar-mass limit, where the soliton is formed by the balance between self-gravity and a repulsive self-interaction, we study the infall of the scalar field onto the central Schwarzschild black hole. We derive the scalar-field profile, from the Schwarzschild radius to the large radii dominated by the scalar cloud. We show that the steady state solution selects the maximum allowed flux, with a critical profile that is similar to the transonic solution obtained for the hydrodynamic case. This finite flux, which scales as the inverse of the self-interaction coupling, is small enough to allow the dark matter soliton to survive for many Hubble times. Comment: 16 pages

Ecosystem carbon fux partitioning is strongly infuenced by poorly constrained soil CO2 efux (Fsoil). Simple model applications (Arrhenius and Q10) do not account for observed diel hysteresis between Fsoil and soil temperature. How this hysteresis emerges and how it will respond to variation in vegetation or soil moisture remains unknown. We used an ecosystem-level experimental system to independently control potential abiotic and biotic drivers of the Fsoil-T hysteresis. We hypothesized a principally biological cause for the hysteresis. Alternatively, Fsoil hysteresis is primarily driven by thermal convection through the soil profle. We conducted experiments under normal, fuctuating diurnal soil temperatures and under conditions where we held soil temperature near constant. We found (i) signifcant and nearly equal amplitudes of hysteresis regardless of soil temperature regime, and (ii) the amplitude of hysteresis was most closely tied to baseline rates of Fsoil, which were mostly driven by photosynthetic rates. Together, these fndings suggest a more biologically-driven mechanism associated with photosynthate transport in yielding the observed patterns of soil CO2 efux being out of sync with soil temperature. These fndings should be considered on future partitioning models of ecosystem respiration. SUMMARY We analyse a nearly 8-yr record (2010–2018) of the superconducting gravimeter OSG-060 located at Djougou (Benin, West Africa). After tidal analysis removing all solid Earth and ocean loading tidal contributions and correcting for the long-term instrumental drift and atmospheric loading, we obtain a gravity residual signal which is essentially a hydrological signal due to the monsoon. This signal is first compared to several global hydrology models (ERA, GLDAS and MERRA). Our superconducting gravimeter residual signal is also superimposed onto episodic absolute gravity measurements and to space gravimetry GRACE data. A further comparison is done using local hydrological data like soil moisture in the very superficial layer (0–1.2 m), water table depth and rainfall. The temporal evolution of the correlation coefficient between the gravity observation and both the soil moisture and the water table is well explained by the direct infiltration process of rain water together with the lateral transfer discharging the water table. Finally, we compute the water storage changes (WSC) using a simulation based on the physically based Parflow-CLM numerical model of the catchment, which solves the water and energy budget from the impermeable bedrock to the top of the canopy layer using the 3-D Richards equation for the water transfers in the ground, the kinematic wave equation for the surface runoff and a land surface model (CLM) for the energy budget and evapotranspiration calculation. This model forced by rain is in agreement with evapotranspiration and stream flow data and leads to simulated water storage changes that nicely fit to the observed gravity signal. This study points out the important role played by surface gravity changes in terms of a reliable proxy for water storage changes occurring in small catchments.

While teleosaurid diversity collapsed at the end of the Jurassic, most likely as a result of a global cooling of the oceans and associated marine regressions, metriorhynchid diversity was largely unaffected, although the fossil record of Thalattosuchia is poor in the Cretaceous. In order to investigate the possible differences in thermophysiologies between these two thalattosuchian lineages, we analysed stable oxygen isotope compositions (expressed as δ18O values) of tooth apatite from metriorhynchid and teleosaurid specimens. We then compared them with the δ18O values of coexisting endo-homeothermic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, as well as ecto-poikilothermic chondrichthyans and osteichthyans. The distribution of δ18O values suggests that both teleosaurids and metriorhynchids had body temperatures intermediate between those of typical ecto-poikilothermic vertebrates and warm-blooded ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, metriorhynchids being slightly warmer than teleosaurids. We propose that metriorhynchids were able to raise their body temperature above that of the ambient environment by metabolic heat production, as endotherms do, but could not maintain a constant body temperature compared with fully homeothermic ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Teleosaurids, on the other hand, may have raised their body temperature by mouth-gape basking, as modern crocodylians do, and benefited from the thermal inertia of their large body mass to maintain their body temperature above the ambient one. Endothermy in metriorhynchids might have been a by-product of their ecological adaptations to active pelagic hunting, and it probably allowed them to survive the global cooling of the Late Jurassic, thus explaining the selective extinction affecting Thalattosuchia at the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Vertebrate palaeophysiology'.

Such brilliance would put compact neutron sources on par with existing medium flux neutron research reactors. We performed the first neutron production tests on the IPHI proton accelerator at Saclay. The neutron fluxes were measured using gold foil activation and 3He detectors. The measured fluxes were compared with MCNP and GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations in which the whole experimental setup was modelled. There is a good agreement between the experimental measurements and the Monte-Carlo simulations. The available modelling tools will allow us to optimize the whole Target Moderator Reflector assembly together with the neutron scattering spectrometer geometries. Research goal is to find geometric variations in western and eastern flanks of the trench and correlation of the submarine geomorphology with geologic settings and seismicity through numerical and graphical modelling. Methods include GMT based analysis of the bathymetry, geomorphic shape and surface trends in topography and gravity grids. Dataset contains raster grids on bathymetry, gravity, geoid and geological layers. Technical workflow is following: 1) Bathymetric mapping by modules ('grdcut', 'grdimage'); 2) Datasets visualizing and analysis, 3) Topographic and gravimetric surface modelling by ASCII data; 4) Cartographic mapping ('psbasemap', 'psxy', 'grdcontour') 4) 3D-mesh modelling; 5) Automatically digitized orthogonal cross-stacked profiles ('grdtrack'); 6) Visualizing curvature trends ('trend1d'); 7) statistical histograms. Results reveal unevenness in the structure of the submarine landforms. Modelling cross-section profiles highlighted depth variation at different parts of the transects and seafloor segments. Geomorphic structure has straight shape form of the slopes with steep oceanward forearc. Its geometry has steep and strait shape which correlates with seismicity. Depth samples vary:-3000 to-6200 m, seafloor is 3-5 km wide. Trench has symmetric accurate 'V-shaped' geometric form for the segment of-30 to-30 km. Oceanward side slope increases towards continental shelf, left flank stabilizes in depths at-50 km from the trench axis, deepens at-50 to 0 m, decreases at-3,200 to-5,800. Oceanward flank gradient varies: slope steepness of 35,63° at 0-20 km, 42,17° at 20-40 km, 44° at 40-60km. Left flank has 43,24° at 0-24 km, 28,33° at 24-40 km, 14° at 40-60 km, 1,13° at 60-200 km. Marine vertical gravity correlates with tectonic slab contours (20-30 mGal on the trench slopes). The study demonstrated effective GMT-based framework with a multidisciplinary scope that combined cartographic methods of modelling deep-sea trench profiles with geological, bathymetric and geophysical analysis. Technical application of the advanced cartographic solutions and high quality mapping by GMT demonstrated its functionality for data analysis and effectiveness of the geoinformation processing. Proposed techniques and workflow methodology provided framework for geological mapping and can be applied in further similar research.

International audience; The Lago Superiore Unit (LSU, Monviso Massif, Italian Western Alps) is a section of fossil oceanic lithosphere equilibrated to eclogite facies conditions (550 °C – 2.8 GPa) during Alpine subduction (45–40 Ma). It is cut by two major shear zones, namely the Intermediate (ISZ) and Lower Shear Zone (LSZ), mostly consisting of serpentinite. The lowermost, serpentine-rich, section of the Lago Superiore Unit, the Basal Serpentinite, separates the HP ophiolite domain from the underlying continental Dora-Maira Unit.Here we show that the LSZ and the Basal Serpentinite were active at different stages of the subduction and exhumation history of the complex. Most of retrograde deformation and mineral re-equilibration were localized in the LSZ. Channelized fluids percolating during this phase chemically homogenized the LSZ serpentinites, that preserved their HP mineralogy only locally; the best-preserved relicts of the eclogite-facies high pressure stage within the LSZ serpentinite are nodules of magnesite (representing former veins) and eclogite blocks. Differently, the underlying Basal Serpentinite largely escaped the exhumation-related processes and still records the prograde chemical and petrological history of the LSU serpentinite, from ocean-floor hydration to HP metamorphic conditions.The Lago Superiore Unit thus represents a snapshot of major Alpine metamorphic and shearing events, from prograde subduction to exhumation. Its km-scale thickness, and the oriented antigorite fabric in the Lower Shear Zone and Basal Serpentinite makes it a good seismic reflector. This HP ophiolite complex can thus be used as proxy of a deep (70–80 km) Alpine-type subduction zone, and to better constrain and interpret seismic images of present-day convergent margins.
