The validity of the marine transgression model derived from a previous interpretation of the geological evidence is assessed; and new ideas about the geological history of the area are discussed. Alongside a re-assessment of the available archaeological data, new archaeological, historical and ecological evidence is reviewed and interpreted. The combined knowledge gained from this range of disciplines leads to a working hypothesis summarising the new ideas about the history of occupation in the coastal plain during the Roman and early medieval periods, explaining how the trends observed can be integrated with the geological and anthropogenic changes in the landscape.

The project was financially supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research(BMBF) within the framework of the research programme DEKLIM (www.deklim.de). The purpose of the joint project is to reconstruct the climate of past interglacials and to contribute to the understanding of mechanism that are responsible for the transition to a cold stage. This project was coordinated by the Institute for Geosciences, University of Mainz. A description of all individual proposals can be found at: http://www.uni-mainz.de/FB/Geo/Geologie/sedi/index.html The datasets in the CERA database are the results of the project contributions of the Model and Data Group at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology and the Institute for Meteorology at the FU Berlin. The coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model ECHO-G has been used to perform climate simulations of the Eemian interglacial (125,000 years before present) and the subsequent glacial inception (115,000 years before present) by adapting Earth s orbital parameters and greenhouse gas concentrations to conditions of these periods. A simulation of pre-industrial climate is available for comparison. Summary: The purpose of the project DEKLIM-EEM is to reconstruct past interglacials based on proxy data and to understand the processes that are responsible for climatic changes during these interglacials by applying climate models. The data represent monthly average value of a simulation of the climate of the Last Interglacial (LIG) at 125000 years before present (Eemian). Boundary conditions are the same as in the preindustrial control run (ECHOG_A15_PRI), apart from the concentration of greenhouse gases and orbital parameters: Greenhouse gas concentrations are derived from vostok ice core data: 270ppmV CO2, 0.63 ppmV CH4 and 260 ppbV N2O. CFCs are set to zero. Orbital parameters have been calculated with the routine of Berger (1978): Eccentricity: 0.04; Obliquity: 23.79; Precession: 127.3. The simulation has been started with the Levitus ocean climatology. ECHO-G is used as climate model. It is a coupled atmosphere/ocean model (ECHAM4_T30 + HOPE-E_T42er). The simulation was run on a NEC-SX6 (hurrikan). Atmospheric data were originally stored by the model every 12 hours. Ocean data is stored every month. As the boundary conditions are not time dependent, the time access is arbitrary. Related experiments: - ECHOG_A40_LGI: control run, last glacial inception (End of the Eemian, 115 kyrBP, DEKLIM-EEM project), started with Levitus climatology, monthly mean values - ECHOG_A15_PRI preindustrial control run (ca. 1800 A.D., DEKLIM-EEM project), started with Levitus climatology, monthly mean values.

Abstract. The Aswan Conference was the result of a collaboration involving the CNR Institute of Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CNR-ISMA), the Scientific Office at the Embassy of Italy in Egypt, the Nubia Museum and the Nubia Fund (Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities), UNESCO - Cairo Office and Aswan University. The theme of the Conference can be summarized in three words: Science meets Archaeology. Geologists, physicists, meteorologists, biologists, experts in ICT, remote sensing and in the analysis of satellite data, met with archaeologists, museologists and conservators to discuss, initially, how climatic and cataclysmic events affected the evolution of ancient civilizations in the course of history. Inevitably, it became an occasion to discuss how scientists, archaeologists and more generally operators of cultural heritage can work together.

Three clusters could be discerned, one representing a combined Meuse-Scheldt source, the other two representing a mixed Rhine-Baltic source. We made slice maps at several depths through the formation, and plotted the cluster memberships. The maps show an overall dominance of the Meuse-Scheldt source in the south of the Netherlands, whereas the Rhine-Baltic source occurs mainly in the central Netherlands. The methods employed show that it is possible to map and study the 3-D variation in heavy-mineral composition and hence sediment provenance in the Dutch subsurface with the use of simple statistical and visualization techniques.

The site of La Roche-à-Pierrot in Saint-Césaire (Charente-Maritime, France) produced a succession of Mousterian, Châtelperronian and Aurignacian occupations, and continues to play a central role in debates concerning the Middle-to-Upper Palaeolithic transition. The source of controversy surrounding the site relates to ambiguities concerning the overall archaeological sequence, the cultural association of the human remains found at the site and the limited number of robust absolute dates. Here, we present the results of a multiscalar, multiproxy geoarchaeological investigation of the site's sedimentary sequence. Our study integrates geomorphology, field lithostratigraphy, microstratigraphy, geochemistry and absolute dating methods (radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence) designed to characterize site formation processes. We propose a site formation model involving the evolution of a karstified limestone cliff from a semi-closed system to an exposed slope deposit, with sediments at the base of the cliff accumulating under periglacial conditions of MIS3, broadly between ca. 59.9 ± 3.9 ka and ca. 37.7 ka. The lowermost Mousterian occupations took place in a semi-closed, sheltered space in which sedimentary rates were low, involving mainly cryoclastic roof spall and episodic percolation of fine-grained sediment. This depositional environment generated a Mousterian archaeological palimpsest in the proximal area and translocated downslope. Subsequent Mousterian, Châtelperronian and Aurignacian remains embedded within diamictons were deposited in an open-air context, on a sloping surface at the apex of a palaeotalus, and possibly above the site, at the top of the cliff. The resulting diachronous surfaces and immature deposits were subject to solifluction and slopewash, with low sedimentary rates. Our geoarchaeological study sheds new light on previously noted spatial inconsistencies in the archaeological sequence and constitutes a rigorous framework for further archaeological research at the site, highlighting the potential of a multiscalar, multiproxy site formation research to improve stratigraphic investigation of Palaeolithic sites in similar geomorphological contexts.
