The impact of the pandemic on communities’ life has initiated a profound rethinking on the importance of public spaces in the design of the city. This paper discusses some of the results of the workshop "Landscapes for good living. Small scale urban projects. Periurban scenarios in Mezzocammino", held in the second semester of the academic year 2019/2020 in conjunction with the lockdown regulations promulgated by the Prime Minister's Decree of 9 March 2020. The newly buit-up Torrino Mezzocammino district, next to the GRA ring road of Rome, has been selected due to the provision of configured spaces scattered throughout the urban fabric. It may represent a major opportunity for reflection on a range of multiple and non-exclusive uses, which can be enjoyed in conditions of safety and serenity, on the basis of sharing with the citizens. One of the outputs of the workshop has been a qualitative survey on the perception of the neighbourhood’s public spaces, in collaboration with the Neighborhood Committee. This article reports the results of a section of the questionnaire on issues related to life in the neighbourhood and use of spaces during the early stages of the lockdown.

Background: Despite the well-known efficacy of anti-COVID-19 vaccines in preventing morbidity and mortality, several vaccinated individuals are diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection, which might require hospitalisation. This multicentre, observational, and retrospective study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of vaccinated vs. non-vaccinated patients, both hospitalised with SARS-CoV-2 infection in 3 major hospitals in Northern Italy. Methods: Data collection was retrospective, and paper and electronic medical records of adult patients with a diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 infection were pseudo-anonymised and analysed. Vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals were manually paired, using a predetermined matching criterion (similar age, gender, and date of hospitalisation). Demographic, clinical, treatment, and outcome data were compared between groups differing by vaccination status using Pearson’s Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Moreover, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the impact of vaccination status on ICU admission or intra-hospital mortality. Results: Data from 360 patients were collected. Vaccinated patients presented with a higher prevalence of relevant comorbidities, like kidney replacement therapy or haematological malignancy, despite a milder clinical presentation at the first evaluation. Non-vaccinated patients required intensive care more often than their vaccinated counterparts (8.8% vs. 1.7%, p = 0.002). Contrariwise, no difference in intra-hospital mortality was observed between the two groups (19% vs. 20%, p = 0.853). These results were confirmed by multivariable logistic regressions, which showed that vaccination was significantly associated with decreased risk of ICU admission (aOR=0.172, 95%CI: 0.039–0.542, p = 0.007), but not of intra-hospital mortality (aOR=0.996, 95%CI: 0.582–1.703, p = 0.987). Conclusions: This study provides real-world data on vaccinated patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in Northern Italy. Our results suggest that COVID-19 vaccination has a protective role in individuals with higher risk profiles, especially regarding the need for ICU admission. These findings contribute to our understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection outcomes among vaccinated individuals and emphasise the importance of vaccination in preventing severe disease, particularly in those countries with lower first-booster uptake rates.

Background: Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), driven by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has disproportionately affected the elderly, with comorbidities like sarcopenia worsening prognosis. Considering the significant impact of RNA vaccines on survival rates in this population, our objective is to investigate the impact of vaccination on the survival of hospitalized elderly patients with COVID-19, considering the presence or absence of sarcopenia. Methods: Prospective study conducted on 159 patients aged>65 years from September 2021 to March 2022. Data about clinical and body composition, and mortality at 12-months after discharge were recorded. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the 2019 European Consensus criteria. Results: At the twelfth month post-discharge, vaccinated sarcopenic individuals exhibited a mortality risk similar to vaccinated non-sarcopenic individuals, and lower than unvaccinated non-sarcopenic patients. Cox regression analysis, adjusted for age, gender, comorbidity, functional and vaccinal status, showed that the presence of sarcopenia did not significantly impact the risk of death within 12-months post-discharge. Discussion: Vaccination emerges as a protective measure for sarcopenic patients, countering the potential adverse effects of sarcopenia on COVID-19 outcomes, underscoring the importance of immunization in the frail elderly with a call for meticulous monitoring of its benefits. Conclusions: Our study represents the first attempt to analyze the vaccine's effect on survival in sarcopenic hospitalized older adults with COVID-19. The administration of vaccination to sarcopenic patients proves pivotal, as its omission could lead to notably unfavorable outcomes within this specific population.

Restrictions on social and economic activities, as well as vaccinations, have been a key intervention in containing the COVID-19 epidemic. Our work focuses on better understanding the options available to policymakers under the conditions and uncertainties created by the onset of a new pandemic. More precisely, we focus on two control strategies. The first aims to control the rate of new infections to prevent congestion of the health care system. The latter directly controls hospitalizations and intensive care units (ICUs) occupation. By a first-order analysis, we show that, on the one hand, due to the difficulty in contact tracing and the lack of accurate information, controlling the transmission rate may be difficult, leading to instability. On the other hand, although hospitalizations and ICUs are easily accessible and less noisy than the rate of new infections, a delay is introduced in the control loop, which may endanger system stability. Our framework allows assessing the impact on economic and social costs of the above strategies in a scenario enriched by: i) population heterogeneity in terms of mortality rate and risk exposure, ii) closed-loop control of the epidemiological curve, and iii) progressive vaccination of individuals.
