    To improve the adherence of future R&I activities, Ben@Rail shall develop a framework based on a stakeholder analysis and technological inputs. To achieve the final goal of assessing the benefits of the stakeholders from future R&I activities, the technological inputs will in the final stage be compared and weighted against the stakeholder requirements. This will allow to verify the research priorities within the upcoming Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (ERJU). This document provides a structured overview of the R&I objectives given by the research plans published by the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) and the ERJU, and with this delivers the technical inputs for the comparison with the stakeholder requirements defined in Deliverable D1.1 “Simplified stakeholder tree and weighting matrix of requirements”. The objectives have been extracted from different documents, with a main focus on the “Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking Master Plan” (MP) and the “Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking Multi-Annual Work Programme” (MAWP). Additonal documents, published by other Shift2Rail research projects, like TER4RAIL and Mobility4EU, or representatives of other transport sectors, have been examined as well.

    Authors: Qirui Li;

    Managing and sharing data during a research project has clear advantages. It allows one to quickly find and understand the data when one needs to use it. It also gives continuity if project staff leave or new researchers join, and it avoids unnecessary duplication. A Data Management Plan (DMP) helps to save time and effort and makes the research and data-sharing process easier. By considering in advance what data will be created and how one can organize the necessary support concerning personal data and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) legislations and protection of individual Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

    The exploitation of industrial crops for the production of ligno-cellulosic compounds and vegetable oil on marginal lands relies on efficient harvesting and logistics’ strategies. The present deliverable goes through the difficulties encountered from harvesting to dispatchment of indrustrial crops highlighting prons and cons of the currently available technologies to improve the whole value chain in the following categories: lignocellulosic crops (fiber, herbaceous perennial and Short-Medium Rotation Coppice (SRC-MRC)) and oil crops. The two sections are indipendently investigated focusing on harvesting and densifiction of the biomass to reduce cost and increase profitability. The information provided within the present document was gathered from experimental data collected on fields, from literature review and background knowledge gained from collaboration in previous research projects. Regarding fiber crop (in particular hemp) it is possible to say that there are several solutions available to harvest this species, which should be properly selected according to the crop features and to the aim of the cultivation, i.e. fiber and seed-fiber. Focusing on lignocellulosic crops, the present deliverable focused mainly on miscanthus, describing the possible alternative solutions which are generally based on cutting the plants and densify them through chipping and/or baling. Harvesting systems for SRC and MRC have been instead experiencing a substantial change in the last years, shifting from dedicated systems for biomass harvesting and densification to semi or fully mechanized harvesting approaches, derived from forestry sector, in order to produce fiber wood from the main stem and biomass from branches and tops. Finally, concerning oil crops, it is possible to say that, among the investigated ones, camelina and castor can efficiently be harvested with conventional combine harvesters equipped with cereal and sunflower header respectively. Castor bean harvesting is instead still a great challenge, indeed the present deliverable highlights how a sunflower header is a better option than a cereal one, but however many concerns are still present regarding seed loss and quality of the collected product.

    Construction of solutions for maintaining the economic and environmental sustainability of the arable sector relies on demonstration and understanding of local practical knowledge. This report presents the results of a survey of growers to identify local practical knowledge of current species mixtures, the reasons for these current mixtures as well as barriers and enablers towards more intercropping approaches. The key characteristics of those conducting food intercropping are contrasted against those who grow for forage and those who do not undertake these particular types of intercropping. A novel network approach is used to link the main types of intercropping and this indicates the diversity of intercropping strategies occurring across Europe. Moreover, farmers currently conducting food intercropping emerge as curiosity driven, generally younger and more focused on promotion of individual values around the environment. This seems to agree with the literature on both organic and agro-ecological farming practices. However, farmers have a core of belief around the economic sustainability of the business. The survey provides valuable data for the multi-actor partnerships currently evolving within the ReMIX project to understand the main barriers to uptake.

    This report summarizes the discussions during two virtual meetings with different stakeholders with interest in the Barents Sea and off-Greenland ecosystems, respectively. The meetings were based on the work from Task 6.8 “Demonstrations for fisheries and environmental management agencies” and Task 6.2. “Improved ecosystem understanding and management”. Stakeholders represented a broad specter of marine- and maritime-related authorities in Norway, Greenland and Denmark, the fishing industry, the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group of the Arctic Council, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, INTAROS partners and participants from other EU projects. The presentations of the monitoring and model results were refined and angled to be of relevance and use for the participating stakeholders. The stakeholders were in general interested in the approach, results, and conclusions. The discussion made it clear that as users in charge of sectorial human activity management, they valued scientific testing and suggestions for improving ecosystem understanding. They recommended that the next step could be to look at not only national data set indicators, but also relate those to an Arctic international setting. The Norwegian Environmental Agency suggested that a climate approach would be useful also for the Barents Sea. Likewise, the more complex food web indicators presented for the Barents Sea could be useful to apply to the Greenland coastal system. Stakeholders from both geographic areas emphasized that data from long-term monitoring of key variables is important for their work and that models can be useful as supporting information on indicators and future scenarios if the model uncertainty is assessed and explained. These seminars highlight the importance of inviting stakeholders responsible for all sectors of marine-related human activities to dialogues on research and monitoring of the climate, natural resources and ecosystems. In a fast-changing scientific world, with an increasing amount of knowledge, it is important to make available, timely and in the right format, the best possible information.

    Authors: Agnarsson, Sveinn; Smárason, Birgir Örn; Dillman, Kevin;

    This report consists of a risk assessment of the value-chain of the four alternative protein producers taking part in the NextGenProteins project. Two of the firms, Mutatec and EntoCube, have developed technology to produce proteins from insects, one, ARBIOM, is engaged in the production of single-cell proteins (SCP) and the fourth, VAXA, produces proteins from microalgae. The risk assessment was conducted using information gathered for the Deliverable 6.3 in NextGenProteins which provided a thorough analysis of the input-output structure of the production and processing of each firm, and this mapping formed the basis for questions that were put to representatives of each of the four firms. The risk assessment is therefore based on a qualitative methodology. In the first step, representatives from each firm were asked to go carefully through each stage in the production and processing of their protein products and identify any risks. Participants were also asked about to identify risk in other stages of the value chain. In the second step, participants in the risk assessment assigned likelihoods to each risk identified. In the third step, participants were asked to estimate the maximum impact of each risk. The final step in the analysis consisted of the risk evaluation. The risk level was defined by a combination of the likelihood level and the impact score. The risk assessment was done in a qualitative manner and involved no numerical values. The risk assessment revealed that the number of risk factors identified in each case varied somewhat between firms. In three of the four case-studies, most of the risks identified were either minor or moderate, but many of the risks identified in the fourth case were either categorized as major or severe. This is not surprising, given that the analysis was qualitative in nature and therefore based on subjective risk evaluation. Although the four companies have all developed technology to produce alternative proteins, the production and processing differ. Some of the risks identified are therefore idiosyncratic and firm-specific. There are, however, two sets of risks that are common to all the four companies. The first concerns the risk of being unable to attract funding, which is of special relevance for start-up firms that may particularlyfind it difficult to attract the necessary funds. The other risk factor concerns the willingness of consumers to accept the new, alternative proteins. This risk can be mitigated by better marketing, more information and greater transparency.

    Authors: Momi, Sara; Barbero, Cristina; Messervey, Thomas;

    Executive Summary This deliverable (D8.4) contains the REACT’s Market Analysis. REACT project aims to guide and promote a full ecosystem of digital and hard solutions, from which citizens and public entities (local communities) having the role of consumers or prosumers or even prosumagers, and several energy operators (manufacturers of RE and storage technologies, developers of digital solutions, aggregators, ESCOs and energy utilities, DSOs and TSOs) can benefit The REACT System is under validation as a tool aiming to facilitate the business activities within the LV grid, offering services to several players in need to interact with grid operators, and the same DSOs in charge of the grid management. The aim of this REACT Market Analysis is multiple:  To ease the process by which REACT partners can be facilitated on how the decarbonization of geographic islands can be done and is feasible by matching RES technologies to energy flexibility enabled by digital platforms and solutions.  To prepare the right knowledge and benchmarking context for several business model taking shape at REACT level. As there is a real chance to validate the solution on energy communities, under the form of Renewable Energy Community (REC)1, through this Market Analysis there is the chance to understand all the factors having a beneficial for islanders to manage demand and/or offer of energy production in a smart and efficient way.  To support the consortium in the activities related to replication and scaling up of the REACT solutions for the follower islands (WP7). The consortium has started co- shaping the methodology which could be applied to different types of intervention, starting from the assessment of local assets at energy and economic level (e.g., existing installations – either on fossil or RES technologies; economic sectors linked to energy uses and needs; types of building stocks and their characteristics and uses), including the recognition of strategic infrastructures (especially the ones that are key for permitting data transfer).  To understand what is currently in place at each of the 3 Countries hosting the flagship REACT pilots: Ireland, Spain, and Italy. Specific focus has been provided on the legislative, regulatory and policy framework (with details on the schemes in place for the islands of such countries), which also impact the subsidies, grants, but also charges and levies in place at financial level.  To understand how the REACT identified stakeholders are positioned toward the REACT solution in terms of interest, power, pains, and gains. Besides, thanks to several connections of the REACT consortium, a benchmark of global players and projects, included other EU-funded (mainly H2020) projects gives the framework of how REACT is positioned at RTD and networking level.  To support the consortium in making the link between what has been identified through the identification and further refinement of the Key Exploitable Results (KERs) and the derived Business Models and Exploitation pathways (still under discussion among partners). In terms of technologies, they can include PV, WT, batteries / storage technologies (including Power-2-Hydrogen or a combination of them). A specific place is reserved to ICT platforms of REACT nature that, together with data management and control and smart metering represent an important role on Demand Response (DR) and energy flexibility through REs in islands.

    One of the MAGIC Project targets is “to maximise stakeholder’ mobilization and enhance the impact of the project activities and outcomes for promoting the cultivation of industrial crops on marginal land”. In this line, practice abstracts (PA’s) are short summaries that describe main information that can serve end users in their daily practice. Following the guidelines of the EIP-AGRI and their common format, MAGIC will produce as many PA’s as required for dissemination over the entire duration of the project. PA’s will feed the newsletter and webpage of EIP-AGRI with easily understandable practical knowledge that is expected to reach a broader public. This document presents twenty practice abstracts that introduce the potential or expected results at the end of the project. This report is a living document which will be updated as project progresses and results are available.

    Authors: Panoutsou, Calliope;

    Low input cultivation of industrial crops in land with biophysical marginality can provide valuable resources for biobased products and bioenergy. Important marginality challenges that were improved with the cultivation of industrial crops in marginal land in the understudy Good Practice case studies include among others shallow soil depth, low fertility and light sandy soils, soil contamination, low water availability, limiting rooting conditions and steep slopes. The work in this report discusses the key findings for the characteristics of the selected industrial crops and the marginality challenges improved with their cultivation. Following it discusses the level of potential transferability for the lessons learnt per key attribute (biophysical- environmental, economic, and social) and development stage to other European regions.

    Authors: Agnarsson, Sveinn; Smárason, Birgir Örn; Dillman, Kevin;

    Authors: Panoutsou, Calliope;
